Book Review - SWAMP STORY by Dave Barry

Author:
Dave Barry

Genre: Humorous Fiction
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Release Date: May 2, 2023
Available for Pre-order Now!

About the Book:

Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times bestselling author and actual Florida Man Dave Barry returns with a Florida caper full of oddballs and more twists and turns than a snake slithering away from a gator.

Jesse Braddock is trapped in a tiny cabin deep in the Everglades with her infant daughter and her ex-boyfriend, a wannabe reality TV star who turned out to be a lot prettier on the outside than on the inside. Broke and desperate for a way out, Jesse stumbles across a long-lost treasure, which could solve all her problems—if she can figure out how to keep it. The problem is, some very bad men are also looking for the treasure, and they know Jesse has it.

Meanwhile, Ken Bortle of Bortle Brothers Bait and Beer has hatched a scheme to lure tourists to his failing store by making viral videos of the “Everglades Melon Monster.” The Monster is in fact an unemployed alcoholic newspaperman named Phil wearing a Dora the Explorer costume head. Incredibly, this plan actually works, inspiring a horde of TikTokers to swarm into the swamp in search of the monster at the same time villains are on the hunt for Jesse’s treasure. Amid this mayhem, a presidential hopeful arrives in the Everglades to start his campaign. Needless to say, it does not go as planned. In fact, nothing in this story goes as planned. This is, after all, Florida.

My Review:

Ohmygosh! I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard while reading a book! I could not put this book down! Thank you Dave Barry for erasing the stress of daily life... at least for a while.

Perhaps it's because I have lived in South Florida for most of my life. Or perhaps it's because Dave Barry is such an amazing humorist. Whatever it was, I had this laugh-out-loud movie playing in my head while I read all the crazy antics on page after page. Yes, there was a bit of drama too. And there was some scary stuff mixed in with the funny stuff.  Even the acknowledgements at the end of the book had me laughing.

I was sipping a glass of wine when I read about Buddy, the wild boar, and ended up with the wine coming out my nose I laughed so hard.

Great characters, some of which you may find unbelievable unless, like me, you are from Florida. Yep! I've met a few just like them.

I highly recommend this book to all of my Florida friends. And even if you're not from Florida, you really need to read this book if you need a bit of escape from reality. Loved it!!

I received an ARC from the author and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

About the Author:

The New York Times has pronounced Dave Barry "the funniest man in America." But of course that could have been on a slow news day when there wasn't much else fit to print. True, his bestselling collections of columns are legendary, but it is his wholly original books that reveal him as an American icon. Dave Barry Slept Here was his version of American history. Dave Barry Does Japan was a contribution to international peace and understanding from which Japan has not yet fully recovered. Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys is among the best-read volumes in rehab centers and prisons. Raised in a suburb of New York, educated in a suburb of Philadelphia, he lives now in a suburb of Miami. He is not, as he often puts it so poetically, making this up.

Dave’s most recent books are “Best. State. Ever.: A Florida Man Defends His Homeland,” and “Lessons From Lucy: The Simple Joys of an Old, Happy Dog.” His next book, “A Field Guide To The Jewish People,” which he co-wrote with his friends Adam Mansbach and Alan Zweibel, will be published September 24. Dave is not Jewish, but Adam and Alan are, so it’s kosher.

Book Review - IDENTITY by Nora Roberts

Author:
Nora Roberts

Genre: Romantic Suspense, Crime Fiction
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Release Date: May 23, 2023
Available for Pre-order Now!

About the Book:

The #1 New York Times-bestselling author's terrifying new thriller about one man's ice-cold malice, and one woman's fight to reclaim her life.

Former Army brat Morgan Albright has finally planted roots in a friendly neighborhood near Baltimore. Her friend and roommate Nina helps her make the mortgage payments, as does Morgan's job as a bartender. But after she and Nina host their first dinner party—attended by Luke, the flirtatious IT guy who'd been chatting her up at the bar—her carefully built world is shattered. The back door glass is broken, cash and jewelry are missing, her car is gone, and Nina lies dead on the floor.

Soon, a horrific truth emerges: It was Morgan who let the monster in. "Luke" is actually a cold-hearted con artist named Gavin who targets a particular type of woman, steals her assets and identity, and then commits his ultimate goal: murder.

What the FBI tells Morgan is beyond chilling. Nina wasn't his type. Morgan is. Nina was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. And Morgan's nightmare is just beginning. Soon she has no choice but to flee to her mother's home in Vermont. While she struggles to build something new, she meets another man, Miles Jameson. He isn't flashy or flirtatious, and his family business has deep roots in town. But Gavin is still out there hunting new victims, and he hasn't forgotten the one who got away.

My Review:

There is a reason why Nora Roberts is the #1 romance author in the country. And there is a reason why she has sold over 500 million copies of her books. She is just that good of a writer. And this book did not disappoint! It had everything!

When Gavin, the smooth con-man, murdered Nina, I think I stopped breathing for a moment. And then when he stole Morgan's identity, I felt it down to my inner core. No one should ever have to go through losing everything the way Morgan did.

I don't want to give away any spoilers beyond what is already written in the blurb, but this story showed how a person can come back from all of that horror. It showed how a person can rebuild their life... and all for the better.

The romance didn't show up until halfway through the book, but that was good. I liked the slow buildup. Morgan had to find herself first. And the romance was indeed very, very good. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes romantic suspense.

I received an ARC from the author and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

My Review:

If you're looking for a great thriller or mystery, you really can't go wrong with any book written by Christina Dodd. This may not have been my favorite, but it was still a page-turner and a great read.

Evie feels fortunate to have landed a great job with Donald White, but there were so many red flags thrown in front of her, I started to feel that Evie was far too naive for her own good. There were a few times that I wanted to scream at her! And the touch of romance toward the end didn't seem quite right either. But all in all, this was an interesting book and I enjoyed reading it.

About the Author:

Christina Dodd
: Readers become writers, and Christina has always been a reader. Ultimately she discovered she liked to read romance best because the relationship between a man and a woman is always humorous. A woman wants world peace, a clean house, and a deep and meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and love. A man wants a Craftsman router, undisputed control of the TV remote, and a red Corvette which will make his bald spot disappear.

When Christina’s first daughter was born, she told her husband she was going to write a book. It was a good time to start a new career, because how much trouble could one little infant be?
Ha! It took ten years, two children and three completed manuscripts before she was published. Now her fifty-nine New York Times and USA Today bestselling novels — paranormals, historicals, and suspense — have been translated into twenty-five languages, recorded on Books on Tape for the Blind, been called, “Books To Read If You Love Nora Roberts!” by Bookbub and the year’s best by Amazon and Library Journal. Dodd herself has been a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle (11/18/05, # 13 Down: Romance Novelist named Christina.) Booklist calls her, "Wildly entertaining, wickedly witty."
Christina is married to a man with all his hair and no Corvette, but many Craftsman tools.

My Review:

Another wonderful, heartfelt story by one of my favorite authors, Nancy Naigle. Although this is a stand-alone novel, I'm really hoping we see more of these amazing residents of Chestnut Ridge in future books. Please, Nancy, please!! I want more!

While coping with the death of her beloved husband Jeremy, Natalie Maynard, in her vulnerable state, is befriended by a smooth talking, attentive con-artist who steals practically everything she owns. Dealing with the loss of her home and other possessions and the embarrassment of falling for this con-man, Natalie must pick up the pieces to her life and start all over again. She moves into the one possession she still owns... a rustic cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thankfully, with the help of her best friend Sheila, and a good-guy detective who shows Natalie how to trust again, and a small town filled with heartwarming residents who are ready to help, Natalie is able to put her life back together.

In typical Nancy Naigle style, this book brings us warmth, faith, compassion and a sense of "family", whether connected by blood or not.

Only one negative! Reading this book gave me an uncanny craving for Krispy Kreme donuts!

I received an ARC from the author and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

My Review:

Thinking "The Seaside Library" was just another summer romance story, I found myself pleasantly surprised to find that it was so much more! This book deals with long-time friendships and what a person would do to protect a friend. And although there was a sprinkling of romance, there was also a mystery. And a few twists and turns that kept me turning those pages! Did he really do it? If not him, then who?

As always, Brenda Novak has created great, complex characters. I'd love to see more of them in future books and learn more about the private detective, Warner Williams, and also Detective Livingston.

My Rating:

About the Author:
It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak's career as a bestselling author--she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.

"When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book," Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists and won many awards, including five Rita nominations, the Book Buyer's Best, the Book Seller's Best and the National Reader's Choice Award.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children--three girls and two boys. When she's not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising funds for diabetes research (her youngest son has this disease). So far, Brenda has raised $2.6 million. Taken to a fantastical winter wonderland, Lyla hopes that she might discover some of the secrets Mr. Klaus is hiding, and maybe even a way to get her company back. My Review:

I was a bit late in reading this during the holidays, but I must admit that the story was still just as magical. The visualization in my head was as if I were watching a Hallmark Christmas special... with a bit more spice. Author Kate Callaghan did a beautiful job with creating each scene in this magical world.

It was easy to relate to Lyla. She was a well developed character with substance and her own slight flaws. Perfect characterization. Not quite so much for Mason. I had a difficult time connecting to his character and his anger issues were a bit of a trigger for me.

The storyline was good and kept me turning those pages, wanting more. The ending, however, seemed a bit rushed. Still, all in all, it was a good read.

I received an ARC from the author and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

My Rating:

About the Author:

Kate Callaghan released her debut YA dark fantasy trilogy, Crowned A Traitor: A Hellish Fairytale in 2020. While the Hellish Fairytale universe is being expanded, she is also writing adult romance and fantasy.

She loves dark tales, villains and happily-ever-afters—something you will find in all of her books. Chatting with readers and getting to share many different stories is her favourite part of being an indie author.

Currently she lives in Dublin. She loves dramas with subtitles (to silence the characters), coffee, and reading too many dark romances. If missing, please check your local coffee shop. You will find her with her computer and an iced beverage.

About the Book:
A second chance at love awaits two brokenhearted people if they’re just willing to trust each other—and themselves, in USA Today bestselling author Nancy Naigle's The Wedding Ranch.

When Lorri Walker’s husband gifted her with a mastiff puppy on Valentine’s Day, she believed he was recommitting himself to their marriage after going astray. Six months later, he left both her and their dog for someone else. Since her recent move to Dalton Mill to unbraid herself from the past, Lorri’s graphic design business is now flourishing, her growing mastiff, Mister, has plenty of space to romp, and her ex in Raleigh can fade to a distant memory.

Ryder Bolt is haunted by the tragic loss of his wife and young son seven years ago. Thankfully, ranching keeps Ryder busy, and spending time with his niece and nephew—whose venue, The Wedding Ranch, has become a popular tourist destination—keeps him from getting lonely.

When Lorri and Ryder met, love was the last thing they were looking for. When they’re together, smiles come easier and burdens feel lighter, and both are embracing the possibility of something deeper.

But when a long-buried revelation surfaces, the fate that brought them together threatens to tear them apart.

My Review:

I love, love, love a book that will bring out emotions for me. Whether it's smiling, laughing or tears running down my cheeks, I want to FEEL something. And this book by Nancy Naigle had it all! Such a heartwarming story! I loved it!

Lorri Walker is done with love and marriage. She finds herself starting over and doing the things that make her happy. She and her big dog, Mister, are loving life in their new country home. And although she is not looking for love, she finds a sweet connection to Ryder Bolt, who is also not looking for love. When that connection deepens, a realization occurs that could end their relationship. But keep on reading because this story does have a "happily ever after".

Nancy Naigle has created more characters that I was easily able to connect with, and included a few characters from previous books that made me feel l was reliving the past. But don't worry! This is definitely a stand-alone book. Very well done!

Book Review - A HARD DAY FOR A HANGOVER by Darynda Jones

Title:
A Hard Day for a Hangover
Author:  Darynda Jones
Genre:  Mystery, Suspense, Private Investigator
Release Date:  December 6, 2022
 Available for Pre-Order

About the Book:

A Hard Day for a Hangover is another humorous installment in Darynda Jones's wine mystery series deemed: "Laugh-out-loud funny, intensely suspenseful, page-turning fun."—New York Times bestselling author Allison Brennan

Some people greet the day with open arms. Sheriff Sunshine Vicram would rather give it a hearty shove and get back into bed, because there’s just too much going on right now. There’s a series of women going missing, and Sunny feels powerless to stop it. There’s her persistent and awesomely-rebellious daughter Auri, who’s out to singlehandedly become Del Sol’s youngest and fiercest investigator. And then there’s drama with Levi Ravinder—the guy she’s loved and lusted after for years. The guy who might just be her one and only. The guy who comes from a family of disingenuous vipers looking to oust him—and Sunshine—for good.

Like we said, the new day can take a hike.

The blockbuster conclusion to the bestselling Sunshine Vicram trilogy, A Hard Day for a Hangover will have listeners laughing and cheering to the very last page.

My Review:

This is Book #3 in this series about Sheriff Sunshine Vicram and quite frankly, I'm sorry to see it end! Darynda Jones has once again brought us likeable characters that make us laugh and cry. Yes, I laughed out loud at times and had tears rolling down my cheeks at other times. I love the banter between friends and family.

In "A Hard Day for a Hangover", secrets are revealed and questions are answered. There is a mystery to be solved (one that gets your heart pounding while you sit on the edge of your seat), and a relationship that needs to be fixed (that makes you smile and your heart will warm). Although the author gives you some background information, you really should read the first two books in this series to fully understand the background between Sunshine, Levi, Auri, Cruz and everyone else. You will be so glad that you did. Book #3 picks up right where Book #2 left off.

Although "A Hard Day for a Hangover" was read as an ebook, I listened to the two previous books in this series on audio. If you are into audio books, I highly recommend this series. Heck! I highly recommend this series no matter how you read it.
