#BookBlitz & #Giveaway - Dear Banjo by Sasha Wasley

Dear Banjo
Sasha Wasley
Published by: Penguin Random House
Publication date: May 29th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
They were best friends who were never meant to fall in love – but for one of them, it was already way too late.
Willow ‘Banjo’ Paterson and Tom Forrest were raised on neighbouring cattle stations in the heart of the Kimberley. As young adults, sharing the same life dreams, something came between them that Willow cannot forget. Now ten years have passed since she’s even spoken to Tom.
When her father falls ill, Willow is called home to take over the running of the family property, Paterson Downs. Her vision for a sustainable, organic cattle station is proving hard to achieve. She needs Tom’s help, but is it too late, and all too complicated, to make amends?
Tom’s heartfelt, decade-old letters remain unopened and unmentioned between them, and Willow must find the courage to finally read them. Their tattered pages reveal a love story like no other – and one you’ll never forget.
Dear Banjo is a wildly romantic and utterly captivating story about first love and second chances from an exciting new Australian author.

EXCERPT:
Somehow she managed to pack up the entire apartment overnight. On the way to the airport the next morning, Willow got the taxi driver to drop in at Tanya’s place. Her friend was still in her pyjamas when Willow gave her the keys to her apartment and a couple of hundred dollars. Tanya tried to refuse the money but Willow pushed it into her hand.
‘No, Tan, I’ve booked professional cleaners and I need you to pay them for me. Keep whatever’s left over as a thanks. And could you possibly go in and get rid of the boxes I’ve left behind? You can have anything from them or just donate it all to charity. And then if you could just drop the keys off to the real estate agent, I’ll be grateful forever.’
Tanya nodded and her eyes went a little glassy. ‘You’re really going, aren’t you? For good, I mean.’
‘Yeah. Going home at last. I can’t believe I stayed in the city this long.’
Tears spilled down Tanya’s cheeks. ‘I’m going to miss you.’
‘Oh, Tan. You should come visit.’ Willow hugged her. ‘I’ll stay in touch.’
‘It’s not the same,’ Tanya sobbed.
‘I’ll call you in a couple of days, okay?’
Tanya nodded and gave her another tearful hug before letting Willow leave.
Jeez, Willow thought as she ran back to the taxi. Shows of emotion had never been her thing. Okay, she was moving a couple of thousand kilometres away, and she’d miss seeing Tanya at work, but surely it wasn’t worth crying over.
A memory of her sessions with a psychologist surfaced. Willow, you tend to hold people at arm’s length. Why don’t you try letting people in a little more? Willow snapped her attention back to the present, logging into the power company’s website on her phone to cancel her account.
She checked in for her flight and paid an exorbitant amount for her excess baggage before watching it glide away on the conveyer belt – the sum total of her adult life in two large suitcases. No, she remembered. 3700 square kilometres, 6500 head of cattle, a groundbreaking, humane, organic beef operation. That would be the sum total of her adult life.
She settled into her seat and thanked the heavens she’d been placed next to a young fly-in-fly-out type, probably contracted to the Herne River catchment project. He was already plugged into his tablet and watching a show involving zombies, so she wouldn’t have to talk to anyone during the flight. She wanted to write a to-do list. As soon as they were in the air she reached into her bag for a notepad and her hand met something unfamiliar. Not her notepad.
Tom’s letters.
Willow considered them, her heart rate bumping up all over again. Wouldn’t it almost be an invasion of Tom’s privacy to read them now, so long after he’d intended her to? Maybe those sleeping dogs should just be left to lie?
Yes, she would bin them all – drop them into the roving rubbish bag the next time the steward came around.
But she would be living next door to the Forrests again once she got home. By now, Tom would soon be taking over Quintilla, just as she was about to do with Paterson Downs. Their families were as close as ever. She’d need to resume some kind of relationship with Tom Forrest, no matter how difficult the initial patching up phase would be.
Maybe she could use this three-hour flight from Perth to Mount Clair to read all of Tom’s letters at last. She hadn’t even given the poor guy a chance after looking at the first couple. She’d been so absorbed in her own pain; grappling with the panic she felt every time she thought about what he’d done. Perhaps there had been an apology in one of those letters – an apology she should have acknowledged by now. A retraction of that awful moment when he’d said those words . . .
Tom’s handwriting was scrawled across the front of the topmost envelope – always familiar, no matter how long it had been. Willow took a shaky breath. Seven-thirty in the morning was a little early for a stiff drink, so she requested a coffee and pulled out the first two letters; the ones she’d opened and read ten years earlier.
Dear Banjo,
Happy New Year. I guess you’re settled in at the student hall by now. You sure went early. The other kids who got in aren’t leaving until February. I don’t know where you’re staying so I asked Beth to send this on to you. You might have heard I’m probably not going to take up my offer of a place at uni. I’m thinking I’ll defer my course – for now, anyway. Dad’s not fazed. He won’t have to hire extra help this way, not to mention the savings on the tuition fees. Mum’s not overly happy but I keep telling her it’s only for the year. She asks a lot of questions. Not really sure what else to say to you, Banjo. It’s weird without you. Whenever I’m on the quad I turn towards Patersons before I remember you’re not there any more. I keep thinking I’ll see you at the eastern gate, sitting on Rusty, ready for a fenceline race. You knew I’d always beat you but you’d have a go anyway. So, yep. Really weird. You’ve always just been there. I guess it doesn’t quite compute yet. Take care of yourself in the big city, okay?
Tom
P.S. We should probably try to sort this mess out.

#BookBlitz & #Giveaway - The Royal Treatment by M.J. Summers

The Royal Treatment
M.J. Summers
(Crown Jewels Romance #1)
Publication date: May 23rd 2017
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance
Enough laughs to satisfy fans of Bridget Jones. Enough sparkly shoes and breathtaking ball gowns for fans of Cinderella…
Twenty-eight-year-old Tessa Sharpe, a.k.a. The Royal Watchdog, hates everything about Prince Arthur. As far as she’s concerned, he’s an arrogant, lazy leech on the kingdom of Avonia. When he shocks the nation by giving her the keys to the castle in an attempt to boost his family’s dismal public approval ratings, Tessa has no choice but to accept and move in for two months. It’s lust at first sight, but there’s no way she can give in to her feelings—not if she wants to have a career or a shred of pride left when her time at the palace ends.
Ultra-private, ultra-hot Crown Prince Arthur has always gotten by on his charm. But that won’t be enough now that the Royal Family is about to be ousted from power once and for all. When Prince Arthur has to rely on the one woman in the kingdom who hates him most, he must learn that earning the love of a nation means first risking his heart…
Can two natural enemies find their forever in each other’s arms, or will they ruin each other to save themselves?
[PLEASE NOTE: The Crown Jewels Series is not a typical MJ Summers book. It’s a light romantic comedy, very heavy on the laughs with a low steam level (but lots of delicious sexual tension and some swearing).]

EXCERPT:
Prince Arthur:
When we reach the vault room, there are two guards standing at the door. Normally there is just one, sitting on the inside; but for nights like tonight, there are a total of six. I nod, and one of them opens the door.
“Good evening, fellows,” I say.
“Good evening, Your Highness.”
Once inside the room, we go through the same routine with the other four men. I go to the keypad and press the code, then hold my face in front of the camera for a retina scan. When I look down at Tessa, she actually looks impressed.
“A little Bond-esque, no?” I ask.
“Very.”
“Come on, Moneypenny, let’s get you something for that beautiful neck of yours.” I tug her hand and pull her in with me before she can say no.
She’s already shaking her head, but I hold up one finger. “I can see those Sharpe family brains of yours going to work on ten different reasons why you won’t borrow a necklace, but I have already prepared counterarguments, and since we are now twelve minutes behind schedule, please allow me. One, they’re already paid for, some of them hundreds of years ago, so it’s not coming out of anyone’s taxes. Two, like the books in the library, they’re going to waste in here. Three, for the first time in my life, I want to share something with someone else—someone who deserves to feel like a queen, even if she’ll only allow herself that for one measly little evening. Four, I have this fantasy of seeing you in only the jewels. Maybe the heels could stay.”
Tessa laughs and her cheeks go pink. “All right. One necklace, but make it a cheap one.”
I raise one eyebrow. “Define cheap.”
“Less than a kitchen stool.”
“How about less than a car?”
“Sofa.”
“I said ‘queen.’ Would a queen really wear a sofa around her neck?” I reach up and run my fingertips along the base of her neck.
“Would she wear a car?”
“Good point.” I lean down and kiss the crook of her neck. “How about this? You choose whichever one you like the best, and I won’t tell you how much it’s worth.”
I continue to brush my lips along her skin, then move up to her earlobe. The other night, I discovered a little spot at the base of her ear that turns her to putty. After a moment of some careful work, I get what I want. A breathy, little ‘okay’ escapes her lips.

#BookBlitz & #Giveaway - Smoke and Mirrors (The Ever Chace Chronicles, Book 3) by Susan Harris

Smoke and Mirrors
Susan Harris
(The Ever Chace Chronicles, #3)
Published by: Crimson Tree Publishing
Publication date: May 29th 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Ever Chace is a Valkyrie, but not just any Valkyrie—she’s a Valkyrie queen in the making.
Torn between the past and present, love and obligation, Ever is terrified of saying the words that would break the curse she is bound to. Pushing Derek away hasn’t simplified things; it has only made her miserable. With her father waking, and her and Derek’s lives on the line, can she really shy away from who and what she is becoming? How long can Ever keep her past lives a secret?
Pushing thoughts of his mate aside, Derek tries to focus on the task at hand—tracking down a monster that leaves nothing but a husk behind. But Ever is never truly off his mind, even as two of his own become targets of the unsub. Can he set his personal distractions aside to keep his team alive?
EXCERPT:
Caitlyn bade Derek farewell and left him staring out at the stars. Making her way outside, she inhaled the night air, tasting the frost in the air before it quickly evaporated, her lungs no longer functional. Her heels clicked against the concrete as she hurried towards her car, the sound of her name being called as she reached the car hasting her movement.
“You heading home?”
Donnie had sensed when she’d left the station and would, of course, make sure she was alright before he continued on with his duties.
“I am. Are you staying here for a while?”
Folding his arms across his chest, Donnie tilted his head and narrowed his gaze. “Yeah, I have one or two leads to follow up before I head out. I should get home just after sunrise.”
“Okay, I shall see you then.” Caitlyn turned around as she heard Donnie swear. A hand on her waist caused her to pause, and she turned back to face him.
He never spoke, never made a sound, but the look in his eyes told her exactly what was about to happen. Donnie crushed his lips to hers, pushing her back against the car so that she was trapped between the metal and his overwhelming mass, ensuring that she could not escape.
It was not a gentle kiss, but a claiming of sorts—a strong, bruising meeting of lips that told Caitlyn that Donnie was done waiting and intended to take what he considered his. He nipped her bottom lip, drawing blood, the copper taste mingling with Donnie’s own unique taste. He gave a little groan, and with a little more pressure on her lips, Caitlyn opened up as Donnie tasted, sucked on, and devoured her mouth. And when Caitlyn felt her control slip, eager to succumb to the passion that this man excited from her, Donnie pulled back, finally allowing her space.
“I had to do that. I needed you to know what my intentions are, Cait. I don’t care who claims you are theirs; you are mine, and I plan to seduce you into agreeing with me. I’m the only man you need worry about, Caitlyn Hardi. Because I am yours—now, forever, and always.”

My Review:

I'm generally not a big fan of "shifter" type books, but I have to admit that I truly enjoyed this one.  I listened to the Audible version and it was excellent.  Danny Randerson did a great job changing his voice for each character.

Cody, a nerdy 16-year-old boy, has no idea that he comes from a long line of werewolves.  So when his family is celebrating the holidays in Paris he is shocked at what was happening to him when he suddenly changed into a wolf.  This part bothered me a bit.  I couldn't quite understand why his mother never told him about his heritage when all the signs were there.  And why would his parents take a chance on taking him out in public during a full moon?  And I didn't understand why they didn't explain why they were sending him to live with Uncle Bob in Florida.  AND why an intelligent boy like Cody didn't immediately figure out what the deal was with Uncle  Bob (the reader figured it out immediately).  But I will put all of that aside because Roxanne Smolen wrote an exciting, beautifully written, entertaining tale that included so many of the elements I love in a novel.  There was even a bit of young romance... all clean and sweet, so that this book will do well for young adults.

The characters were well developed and likeable.  Very likeable.  The story was exciting and entertaining with the whole good vs. evil (even though you generally think of werewolves as being evil).  And there were quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, like when grandpa starting shooting his pellet gun at the nudists.. er, I mean "naturalists".  I would have liked to have learned more about Howard, but perhaps he will be addressed further in the other books in this series.  The Indian folklore was fascinating.

Yes, Roxanne Smolen is an author I will watch, and I'm sure I will be picking up Book #2 in this series.

Disclosure:  A complimentary copy of the Audible version of this book was provided by the author.  Although a review was not required, I was compelled to provide one.  All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

My Review:

Ohmigosh! Let me just fangirl for a minute here -- I'm soooo glad that Kalayna Price is back writing and continuing this series. When I first started these books several years ago, I fell in love with this fantastic urban fantasy world and memorable characters. She's one of my "automatic buy" authors and I'll probably keep stalking her new releases for years to come.

If you love Urban Fantasy, anything about Faerie or the Fae, you *need* to pick up this series. Alex Craft is a terrific strong heroine with an affinity for the dead. Yep... she raises shades, talks to ghosts, and even has a crush on "Death" (our mysterious soul collector friend). Her roommate is a Fae, one of her best friends is a witch and medical examiner, and she's also sort of dating a faerie assassin!

Although the main plot in this book is somewhat predictable and there weren't any big surprises from that end, I still loved this book. It was great to get another look at the world, to learn more about the different characters, about Faerie and the courts, and watch the characters grow and their relationships continue to develop. Kalayna Price's writing is wonderful, descriptive, action-packed, and her stories are full of those delicious tingles of sexual tension between Alex and her unusual dating choices.

For fans new to the series, you really need to start with the first book. You'll miss out on a great deal of back story that will lessen your enjoyment of this wonderful addition to the series. As for me, I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the next book (and have already pre-ordered it).

So if you're a fan of Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, or any of the other great Urban Fantasy writers... add Kalayna Price to the list and check out this series! You won't regret it.

#BookReview - The Gullwing Odyssey by Antonio Simon, Jr.

Title:  The Gullwing Odyssey
Author:  Antonio Simon, Jr.
Genre:  Literary Fiction, Fantasy, Humor

With no way home and no hope of making his delivery, he sees sour prospects for attaining his modest retirement dreams, much less getting out of the whole mess alive. Even that wouldn’t be so bad if he weren’t constantly outrunning pirates, embroiled in international intrigue, and attacked by a hummingbird with an appetite for human brains – that’s just the start of his misadventures.

But lurking in the wings is a much greater threat than getting sacked from his job. The fate of an entire civilization may well rest upon his scrawny shoulders. In spite of himself and quite by accident, Marco may yet become the hero he strives not to be.

My Review:

Still chuckling and shaking my head, I just finished listening to the Audible version of The Gullwind Odyssey.  This was an outragously witty and humorous fantasy adventure that I absolutely loved... BECAUSE.

The story starts out as Marco Gullwing, a messenger, is on his way to deliver a parcel to Queen Catherine Saint-Saenz Lucinda of Avignary.  He is mistaken as an emissary and through a series of laugh-out-loud misadventures that include being shot out of a cannon, nearly having his brains sucked out through his nose by a monstrous hummingbird, a romp through the woods with a strange blue lady, being saved by a knight known as Barclay of the New Resurrection Church of the Good Master who makes Marco read from the most holy Book of the Glorious Verb... and so much more.  There were absolutely no lulls in this story.  Marco went from one misadventure to the next, taking along the most fascinating and outrageous characters you can imagine.  There were dragons and wizards and magic and mayhem!  I loved it!

There were a lot of characters in this book, but all of them were masterfully created and unique.  I could visualize each and every one of them.  And the witty conversations between them had my cheeks hurting from smiling so hard.

"Attorney by day, writer by night", that's Antonio Simon, Jr.  If you listen to the Audible version of The Gullwing Odyssey, you'll get a bonus interview between the outstanding and utterly amazing narrator, Elliot Walsh, and the remarkably witty author, Antonio Simon, Jr.  You will also be able to listen to a hint of what lies ahead in Book Two of The Gullwing Odyssey.

Books, Books and More Books!

I had a blast on Sunday, May 21st in Boca Raton Florida!  That was the day of "I Heart Books" sponsored by the Florida Writers Association.  This was so much fun and I came home with several new books to read and review.  And I met some fabulous authors!  Some I have met before and some were brand new to me!

By the way, if I look like I'm half asleep and having a really bad hair day, it's because I had just driven from North Carolina to Boca Raton, Florida with only a couple of hours sleep.

I was happy to see Evelyn Lederman there.  I reviewed her book "Selected" a few months ago and loved it.  The sequel, "Chosen" has just been released, so I'll be reading that very soon!

I also ran into Antonio Simon, Jr. and had a great chat with him about his book "Miami is Missing".  Of course I picked up a copy of that along with another of his books "The Gullwing Odyssey" and a book that is somewhat out of my comfort zone but looked good enough to take a chance on... "Shadows and Teeth".  Watch for upcoming reviews of all three of those books.

Author's are so much fun to talk to!  Here are a bunch more!

I picked up this novel, "Time's Hostage" from
Brenda Kuchinsky too!  Another one that looked really good to me.
❤

"Terra's Call" is on my want-to-read list!
I downloaded the Audible version of "Amazing Wolf Boy" by Roxanne Smolen.  I can't wait to listen to it!

I had a fascinating conversation with M.C.V. Egan about the research involved with her novel "The Bridge of Deaths".  And yes, I picked up a copy of that one too!

Oh!  And here's another novel I'm anxious to read!  "South of Justice" by Joni M. Fisher.  Watch for my review on this one as well.
Wow!  So many books... So little time!

If you've never attended one of these massive book signings, you have been missing out!  There is another one coming up in a couple of weeks... Space Coast Book Lovers on June 1st thru 4th in Cocoa Beach.  On Saturday, June 3rd it will be free to readers from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.  And be sure to keep the dates open for February 22-25, 2018.  That's when Daytona Beach comes alive for Coastal Magic!  I will definitely be at that one as a "Featured Blogger".  Stop by and meet me!  I give free hugs!
