EXCERPT:

“What a mess,” the woman said, brushing at her coat with the napkin Sassy handed to her. “I’m not usually such a klutz.” She gave up dabbing at the cider soaking into the white cashmere and looked to Bo again. “Thank you for catching me before I fell. I’m Juniper, by the way. Juniper Haynes.”

“Juniper,” Bo mumbled, finally managing to gain a miniscule amount of control over his tongue. However, his heart pounded so fast and loud, it echoed like a bongo drum in his head.

“That’s an awesome name,” Sassy said, with the enthusiasm summoned by a teenager impressed by someone older and more worldly. “I’m Sassy, and this is Bo Jensen.”

Juniper’s smile widened as she looked up at him. Even with her high-heeled boots, she barely came up to his chest. Then again, at six-four, he tended to tower over a lot of people.

“Sassy and Bo. It’s so nice to meet you. Thank you, again, for catching me. Happy Christmas Eve.” Juniper turned away and took a lopsided step, but her foot slid on a patch of hidden ice. She would have fallen if Bo hadn’t caught her a second time, his arms looping beneath hers from the back. She tilted her face upward and offered him a look of gratitude.

Something that felt like an electrical current trailed up his arms, threatening to short circuit what few working brain cells he had left.

Words.

He needed words.

To speak—to say anything—but nothing seemed to be able to work its way from his overloaded brain to his mouth. The sharp elbow Sassy jabbed into his side didn’t help any more than her questioning glare to rattle something loose.

Bo stared at the woman, fascinated.

Juniper.

What an intriguing name for an entirely captivating woman.

My Review:

Shanna Hatfield is well known for writing sweet romance with characters the reader can easily embrace.  She has done that once again with her novel HOME OF HER HEART, set during the time of WWII.

Sergeant Klayne Campbell grew up as an orphan, never feeling loved or able to love in return.  Then one night, while lingering behind a Christmas tree in the corner, Delaney Danvers caught his eye... and soon his heart.  By February the two were married, the day before Klayne left for a dangerous mission that took him to fly over Tokyo.  After being severely injured in a plane crash, he fights his way back by holding on to his love for Delaney.  All the while, Delaney has no idea if Klayne is dead or alive.  All she knows is that he left her the day after their wedding night and has heard very little since then.

More tragedy hits the Danvers family that Delaney has to deal with alone.  Although she still loves Klayne deeply, can she forgive him if he returns home?

This story was incredibly sad and although there were a few moments of smile-worthy pages, the majority of the book was just downright sad.  Tears streamed down my cheeks on numerous occasions.  During the months of waiting for Klayne to return, the story dragged a bit, and I felt the frustration that Delaney must have felt.

This is not my favorite of Shanna Hatfield's books, but it is certainly read-worthy, especially if you enjoy books in the time period of the 1940's.  There were interesting time period references to things like chocolate chip cookies, food rationing, war bonds, homemade cloth diapers, music and Bob Hope movies.

My Review:

After reading Crumpets and Cowpies by Shanna Hatfield, I knew I had found a good historical romance author who did her research.  When I noticed that another of her books, Aundy, was available on Kindle Unlimited with the Audible version for only $1.99, I had to get it and my opinion of this author has again been confirmed.  I LOVE her books!

Yes, I occasionally want something spicy and wild to read, but when I'm in the mood for something sweet and clean with romantic tingles and a good solid story with well-developed characters and a setting that is factual, I'm going to reach for another Shanna Hatfield novel.  She is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors.

This is one of those mail order bride books and although that whole theme has been done over and over, this one was a bit different.  Aundy corresponds with Eric Erickson and agrees to travel from Chicago to Pendleton, Oregon to marry him.  He picks her up from the train station, heads to see the preacher, they get hitched and head toward his home.  On the way there something spooks the horses and the wagon tips over, crushing Eric, and this new bride suddenly becomes a widow with a ranch and farm to run.

Aundy doesn't turn tail and run back to Chicago.  No, she is strong willed and determined to run this ranch at a profit (much to the dismay of some of the farmhands and some of the neighbors).  As this city girl digs in her heels and learns everything she can, there are moments of chuckles, but her spirit wins out and she finds a way to make things work.  Add in the good looking neighbor, Garrett, and things get all tingly.

There are sweet moments, gut-wrenching sad moments, frightful moments and a HEA.  I'm not going to give any spoilers beyond what I have already said.  You just need to read this.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet, clean, Christian historical romance.

My Review:

This was one of the more delightful historical romance novels I have read in a long time.  Shanna Hatfield obviously did her research and got the details of life in the late 1800's down perfectly.  As a matter of fact, bits and pieces of interesting facts are interspersed throughout the book.

When Thane Jordan was required to cross the ocean to England in order to settle his brother's estate, he had no idea that his brother (whom he had lost contact with many years prior) had been married and had two children.  The children's mother had died a few years earlier, leaving these children in the care of their Aunt Jemma.  Thane immediately fell in love with his niece and nephew and wanted to take them home to Oregon with him, but found that he needed to take Jemma as well.  Since it would be inappropriate for her to live with this bachelor, it was agreed that they would marry... in name only.  This was done purely for the sake of the children, and because Thane's brother left absolutely nothing for Jemma in his will.  Seemed strange that he had done that, leaving this lovely lady with nothing after she had spent years of her life raising his children.  But we realize why as the story unfolds.

The banter between Jemma and Thane left me chuckling from time to time as their immediate encounter left them appearing as total opposites.  She was a refined English Lady and he was a rough and rugged rancher.

Yes, it was somewhat predictable that they would fall in love, but the entire story of their journey back to the U.S. and this very proper English Lady settling in to life on a ranch with the dirt, mice, snakes and outhouse, was just so delightful that it made this story quite entertaining.

Shanna Hatfield created characters who were multi-dimensional and extremely likable.  The romance was sweet and clean and gave you tingles.  Yes, TINGLES!  The looks, the longing, the gentle touch... but it was all sweet and clean and left the rest to your imagination.

This was the first book I've read by this author, but I have another already sitting here in front of me.  Yes, I liked it that much!
