Title:  Murdered Gods (Shadows of the Immortals, #2)
Author:  Marina Finlayson
Genre:  Urban Fantasy, Action & Adventure
Publisher: Finesse Solutions
Release Date:  December 15, 2016

From the Back Cover:

Lexi didn’t set out to steal a god’s ring, but when a magic artifact starts trying to talk to you, what’s a girl supposed to do? She’s always had the ability to talk to animals, but this new development amps up the crazy. Now she’s afraid her power is out of control and she’s losing her mind.

The only person who could possibly reassure her that she’s not going mad is her mother, who has always refused to discuss the source of Lexi’s strange ability. Now that the jewellery is getting chatty, maybe she’ll finally spill the beans.

Unfortunately, going home means a trip back to the human territories, and Lexi only just made it out of there alive last time. She’s hoping for a quick visit, but with a god hellbent on retrieving the ring and a fireshaper she might have accidentally betrayed on her tail, life is about to get horribly complicated—for her and everyone she cares about.

My Review:

This was another solid addition to this new series. If you haven't read the first book, I suggest you pick it up before reading this one. This second book in the series picks up exactly where we left off in the first one. We start off with a bang, and the action keeps going until the final finishing pages (which leave us eagerly anticipating the next book in the series).

We're learning a little bit more about Lexi and her unusual abilities in this book, and we get to explore a little bit of her hometown in the human territories. However, things are definitely not the way they should be and it looks like even the Gods may be in trouble.

I really enjoyed the twist of the gods in the story, and I'm dying to learn more about Lexi's background. This book left me with a ton of questions and I'm excited about learning more in the next book in the series. My only complaint is the same as the first book -- character development and the emotional connections between the characters were lacking.

There's a suggestion of a hint of romance, but I'm just not feeling it. Other than being told a certain fire shaper is "hot", I get very little sense of an emotional attachment. No tingles. *sigh* Unfortunately, this lack was even more apparent in this book and it affected my enjoyment of the story. I just wish I could get inside Lexi's head a little bit more and this portion of the book was better developed.

I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for updates to this series, particularly with the way it ended. It wasn't a cliffhanger, but there's a whole lot of unresolved and mysterious issues that I'm curious to find out about.

Title:  Stolen Magic (Shadows of the Immortals, Book 1)
Author:  Marina Finlayson
Genre:  Urban Fantasy, Action & Adventure
Publisher: Finesse Solutions
Release Date:  October 18, 2016

From the Back Cover:

Lexi Jardine may be a thief, but she’s not stupid. When a crooked fireshaper wants her to steal a ring from the boss of his order, she knows it’s a one-way ticket to sleeping with the fishes. Her answer is to drop off the face of the earth.

Safely hidden in a quiet seaside town, she just needs to keep her head down and pretend to be a regular human. Since her only magical ability is the power to control animals, that should be easy, right?

Then a new fireshaper shows up in town. He’s hot as hell but oddly hostile. With his suspicious eyes watching her every move, her safe haven starts feeling more like a trap. When her best friend disappears, Lexi knows the time for hiding is over. Though the fireshapers are more powerful, Lexi’s not one to abandon a friend—but it will take everything she’s got to save them both from the flames.

My Review:

This was a pretty quick and fun read. From the first few pages, I got sucked into this new world of shapers, shifters and humans -- and I couldn't put the book down. The main character, Lexi, is sort of a thief... and she doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the shapers, shifters, and humans. She's definitely different -- and it's her differences that make the story interesting. Marina Finlayson has developed an enticing world of urban fantasy with a really cool twist that makes this series definitely one to follow!

The pacing of the book was very good. We didn't get bogged down with too many details and the action kept moving right along. My only issue was that there was very little emotional connection between the characters. Other than being told she's attracted to the new shaper in town, I had very little sense of a connection between the two of them (none of those delicious tingles, sorry). I also had a couple of issues with her relationships with some of the supporting characters - particularly her best friend. Their relationship seemed off somehow as though the two tolerated each other, rather than being truly close. I think, if we'd been able to get a little deeper into Lexi's head and really feel her emotions... this book would have definitely been a solid 5/5 on my list.

Other than that, the plot was intriguing, fun, and the action kept me reading until the late hours of the night. In fact, I got so engrossed and interested in the story... and wanting to know more about this awesome world that I picked up the second book as soon as I finished. For fans of urban fantasy and paranormal who are looking for a quick, fun read, you should definitely check out this new series!
