Book Blitz & Giveaway - BLAME IT ON ROMEO by Sophia Knightly

Blame it on Romeo
Sophia Knightly
(Beach Read, #2)
Publication date: April 10th 2017
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance
Hi, I’m Francesca Lake, WBCG TV’s medical reporter. Privately, I am on a mission to marry a doctor. After my recent mortifying episode in the ER, it’s clear I suck at self-diagnosis. It all started when I thought I was having a heart attack. I made a cringe-worthy entrance at the hospital, but in my defense, I thought I was DYING. You can ask Harrison Taylor, my dog’s vet. He was the one who carried me into the ER.
I used to love my job reporting the social scene, but I’ve been recently drafted as the station’s medical reporter . God only knows what diseases I will have to report on. This is not a good thing for a closet hypochondriac! There’s only one upside–medical reporting means meeting lots of doctors. Surely, there will be a few eligible bachelors in the mix…
I’m trying to ignore my wild attraction to Harrison, but his forest green eyes, rugged physique and warm smile make my insides melt…not to mention other parts. My adorable dog, Romeo, is in love with Harrison, and he’s convinced Harrison is for me. But I’m looking for a “human” doctor. Harrison is an animal doctor. Do I look like an animal? Well, only on a bad hair day, but that’s beside the point.
Marrying a doctor calls for a methodical approach, and I intend to date as many as I can to meet “the one.” I have to ignore Romeo’s blatant attempts to matchmake me with Harrison. But ignoring my pounding heart when I’m around swoony Harrison is another matter entirely…

EXCERPT:
“HEEELP! I’m having a heart attack!” I shout.
My eyes frantically squint against the bright morning sunlight as I scour the near-empty parking lot in search of anyone who can help me. I’m about to scream again when I see my hunky neighbor, Dr. Harrison Taylor, jogging a short distance away.
“Harrison!” I wave my arms to get his attention. “Over here!”
He jogs over and is at my side in a heartbeat. “Frankie, you okay?” Harrison’s forest-green eyes give me a thorough once-over, one that would normally make my knees wobble, but not today. I am too busy panicking as my heart hammers against my chest in what feels like a heart attack.
“I can’t breathe! Can you drive me to the ER?” I squeak in a voice that sounds like I’ve inhaled helium. Electric shocks race from my shoulder down to my fingertips making me clutch my arm. Gape-mouthed, I stare at my upper left arm as it turns pink and puffy.
Harrison propels me into the passenger side of my Jetta, grabs the car keys out of my hand and tears out of the parking lot. With one hand on the steering wheel, he maneuvers the crowded streets of Miami while his other big hand pats my knee.
“Breathe slowly and try to calm your heart rate,” he says in the soothing veterinarian voice he uses to treat sick animals. Except I’m not a sick dog or horse, I am Francesca Lake, WBCG’s “Roving Social Diva” reporter and I was on my way to do an on-air interview with Justin Bieber, for God’s sake!
“What happened?” Harrison asks, casting a concerned look my way.
I point to my arm. “A tharp thting,” I try to explain, but my tongue feels thicker by the second and now I’m lisping.
“Did you say a sting?” He slants an odd look at me. “Never mind. Don’t talk.”
It’s getting harder and harder to breathe and my throat feels tight. I need air in my lungs or I’m not going to make it!
I grab Harrison’s arm. “Harrithon, pleath. Gimme mouth-to-mouth,” I beg.
Harrison’s foot hits the accelerator and within minutes, we arrive at Doctor’s Hospital where he picks me up and runs into the emergency room as if his pants are on fire.
“Help, I’m haffing a heart attack!” I shriek, flailing my arms at the attendant.
“Patient is in anaphylactic shock,” Harrison says in a steady voice.
A young, harried doctor runs up and gives me a quick examination. When I hear him bark out an order for an Epi, I start to panic. Did he order an epidureal? Are they going to operate? I turn to Harrison with beseeching eyes. Before I can say anything, a no-nonsense, matronly nurse materializes before me. I squirm as Harrison holds me securely against his rock-solid chest.
“Hold still. It’s gonna be okay,” Harrison says.
The nurse lifts the skirt of my coral dress and plunges a needle in my upper thigh.
“Yeouch. That hurths.” I shudder as the liquid burns inside my flesh.
Harrison gently sets me down on the gurney brought in by a young male attendant. “You’ll feel better soon. Relax and let the epinephrine do its work.”
Relax? I wish it were that easy. I hate to admit it, but I am a chicken. I wasn’t always a chicken—my motto most of my thirty years was “fear is not an option” and I rarely worried about anything. But after my mom’s recent near-fatal heart attack, I’ve been worrying—a lot—about health issues and a few other things. Every time I remember that Mom might have died if Dad hadn’t been there to call 911, my heart clenches. After hearing what she went through, I pray she’ll never, ever, have another one.
“Why aren’t they giving me an EKG or a heart monitor?” I ask. Oh good, at least I’m not lisping anymore. The shot must have kicked in. I stare into Harrison’s eyes. “I know you don’t think I had a heart attack, but what if it was? Five percent of heart attacks occur in people under forty.”
“So?” Harrison regards me with a bemused expression.
I let out an exasperated breath. “I could be one of that five percent.”
“You didn’t have a heart attack, Frankie.” He rakes a hand through his thick chestnut hair, leaving it appealingly tousled. “You had an anaphylactic reaction caused by an insect bite.”
“Anaphylactic reaction? That sounds ominous. Are you sure?” He could be mistaken. Harrison isn’t a medical doctor—he’s a veterinarian.
Harrison fixes me with a firm look. “Yes, I’m sure.”
* * *
Harrison helps me off the gurney and the feel of his large hand wrapped around mine makes me glance at him. Did he feel the spark between us? I’m tingly all over. God, he’s easy on the eyes with a tall, hard-muscled body that’s sizzling hot and a rugged face with the sexy cleft in the chin. I force my gaze away from his striking green eyes that are watching me with a bemused expression.
Even though Chloe has been trying to matchmake us since I moved down from New York to Miami, I’ve kindly told her I’m not interested. Why? I ask myself as I take in his male beauty, and then I mentally slap myself. Snap out of it! Harrison is a reckless daredevil who loves doing crazy ass stunts. With a boyfriend—or husband—like that, I’d spend too much time worrying about his safety. The last thing I need is more anxiety.
Harrison takes my elbow and leads me down the hall. The feel of his calloused fingertips is pleasantly distracting until we pass a scene that makes me stop and stare. A good-looking young doctor in scrubs checks a female patient’s IV and then leans over and kisses her. Pale-faced, the petite patient looks frightened until the doctor’s lips touch hers and she visibly relaxes. I am riveted and can’t stop staring at them.
“Come on, Frankie,” Harrison urges. “I thought you were anxious to leave.”
I watch the couple from over my shoulder as Harrison tugs me along. The doctor gives the woman another tender kiss and then steps into the hall. I hear him say to another physician, “Take good care of my wife. She gets nervous in hospitals.”
Light bulb flash. Why didn’t I consider this before, I wonder as a life-altering epiphany slaps me upside the head. I need to marry a doctor ASAP.
Until now, I loved my job reporting on South Florida’s fine arts and social scene. I kept busy, too busy to even think about being single at thirty. Okay, I did think about it sometimes, but it wasn’t always on my mind. I had other important things to do, like help my mom get her heart disease under control. With all the changes that occurred last year, I wasn’t exactly good company in a relationship. I found that out when my ex-boyfriend, Todd, dumped me because I was being too moody, which translated to my lack of desire because I was worried about Mom. Good thing I found out he wasn’t the “I’ll love you through thick and thin” type of boyfriend.
After witnessing that scene between the good-looking young doc and his wife/patient, all I can think of is I want to marry a doctor like him who can assuage my medical fears. Marry a doctor. I love the sound of that—it equals no more worrying, which equals getting back to my once carefree self. Most doctors are in their profession to heal and that makes them natural nurturers. I could use some of that nurturing—it sure would be great to feel normal again.
Harrison’s hand settles on the base of my spine as he gives me a gentle nudge. “Let’s go, hon.”
His bold touch sends my thoughts skittering in a different direction. A warm glow suffuses me, and I can’t budge. Did he just call me “hon”? In Harrison’s deep voice, it sounds delicious.
I touch his forearm and gaze into his forest-green eyes. “Uh…Harrison. Thanks for saving my life.”
“You’re welcome.” Harrison gives me a smile so hot it could melt the whole North Pole. I tell myself that he might have a killer grin, but we don’t have anything in common that I know of, except for a love of animals. He craves extreme sports and I can barely hit a ball with a tennis racket. He gets an adrenaline fix from playing with assassin sharks and I have to watch out for bees.
It’s a real shame he won’t do, I think, looking away from those amazing green eyes. After today’s scare, I’m turning my efforts toward my new goal.

RAMBLINGS & RECIPES - Diet is a Four-Letter Word

I can't even begin to tell you how many different diets I've been on! I've tried them all. Low calorie, low carb, the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, Weight Watchers (although I did lose on that one), the paleo diet, the keto diet, and so many more. I have come to the conclusion that I am meant to be fluffy.  Perhaps I need to ponder the diet information I've been harboring. Diet information like:

1.  You can eat anything that is green.  Lettuce, broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts, pistachio ice cream...
2.  Calories are afraid of height. So you need to store your cookies and cakes on top of the refrigerator so that all the calories jump out.
3.  Always break your cookies before eating them. That way, the calories will fall out before the cookie hits your mouth.
4.  Eat while standing. The fat will not settle on your rear end like it does when you eat while sitting. It will just drain down to your feet and then out to the floor.
5.  If you want to try a low carb diet, just lay on the floor when you eat pasta. The lower, the better.
6.  If you eat something and no one saw you eat it, it has no calories.
7.  If your movie ticket comes with a free bucket of popcorn, it doesn't count as food.  It's free.
8.  When ordering pizza, ask that the pizza not be cut, especially if you are only allowed one slice.

I once heard that a good way to lose weight is to eat while standing in front of a mirror... naked.  I tried that once, but the manager of the restaurant asked me to leave.

Apparently these diet tips did not work because I actually GAINED seven pounds while binge-watching Game of Thrones!

In all seriousness, I am going to try again. I really want to lose weight before our trip to Europe this summer. Here is how I will start:

My fitness tracker is set. I will start out at 6,000 steps per day with 30 minutes on the exercise bike.  Every day. No excuses. I will gradually increase the daily steps to 10,000 or more.

No more sugar.

That means no more Girl Scout cookies (darn those little demons in green who accost me in front of Publix with their sweet little smiles and innocent looks!) ***Here's a hint*** If you just can't resist those sweet little smiles, you can always donate them to our military (the cookies, not the little girl scouts)!

Eat smaller portions. Use a smaller plate. Only half a bagel if I absolutely MUST have one. Use fat free milk in my coffee instead of those wonderful flavored sweet coffee creamers (sigh).

Getting on the scale now. I'll let me know how I'm doing. If anyone wants to join me on this adventure into the salad world, let me know! We can do this together.

The recipe I'm including today is:

CAULIFLOWER CHEESE SOUP

This recipe is copied directly from a cookbook I wrote several years ago for my family.  "Recipe's From Home, Volume II" was created from hand-me-down recipes from family members and recipes I received from good friends and neighbors. This particular recipe was given to me by Phillipa Lewis, one of my granny friends from Wales. She got it from her slimming class.  It tastes a bit like potato soup and is low in calories.

Ingredients:
* Pam cooking spray, or olive oil mister
* One onion, chopped
* One head of cauliflower, cut into florets
* 2 cups fat-free chicken broth
* 1/2 cup fat-free milk
* 12 triangles Laughing Cow light swiss cheese
* 1/2 teaspoon paprika
* Salt & Pepper to taste
* Spring onions for garnish

Procedure:
Spray a large saucepan with olive oil or cooking spray; heat. Saute onion until tender. Add chicken broth and cauliflower; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, for about 15 minutes or until cauliflower is tender.

Add the milk and simmer for another 5 minutes. Stir in the Laughing Cow cheese triangles; transfer to a food processor and blend until almost smooth.

Pour the mixture back into the pan and reheat, adding salt and pepper to taste.  Serve garnished with a little paprika and shredded green onion.

My Review:

Very creative plot line! This book had just about everything in a mashup of genre's. SciFi, Urban Fantasy, Romance, Murder Mystery and a hint of Military, all rolled into one.  Nice build-up to the romance part of the book with the chemistry between Cait and Aiden.

Jeanne Adams created some great, and quite unusual, characters! And the storyline was quite unique.

A Tentacle Affaire is book one in this series but since it was released in 2014 I'm wondering if there are going to be more adventures for Cait and Aiden.

About the Author:
Hello Readers!

My newest release is out this SEPTEMBER - it's called THE WITCHES WALK. I'm so excited to have this book go live. It was SUCH fun to write.

The next newest book is a "sort of" anthology - CAPITOL DANGER. This fascinating book, written with authors Nancy Northcott, Suzanne Ferrell and JD Tyler, is meant to read as one integrated novel. And it's right on target, with a female presidential candidate! CAPITOL DANGER features characters from my forthcoming books Dead Reckoning, a Faithful Defenders novel, and Deadly Charms.

My Urban Fantasy/Romance, features the a race to save five senators and the "fight" between tech and magic! That's THE TENTACLE AFFAIRE, a Slip Traveler Novel. The next book in this series, THE RUM RUNNER INCIDENT, should arrive here on Amazon around March 15.

So go, read!! Enjoy!! You'll also find my Thanksgiving Novella, DEADLY DELIVERY and a Christmas novella, BEHIND ENEMY LINES, here on Amazon. BEHIND ENEMY LINES is my first historically set book, with all the action taking place just as WWII breaks out.

I also write thrilling suspense novels, full of action, adventure and romance. Right now, you can buy all of my suspense novels here on Amazon! My last two suspense novels, DEADLY LITTLE SECRETS, and DEADLY LITTLE LIES are connected, although you don't have to read them in order.

I hope you enjoy my books. I've been a full-time writer for 10 years, and have loved every minute of it. I live in DC, have a fabulous family and three ridiculously silly, big dogs, and I like movies and books where things blow up. No wonder I write suspense, right? As one of my favorite authors, Anne McCaffrey is wont to say, the rest is pretty much subject to change without notice! Grins.

About the Author:
I'm not one of those people who knew from birth she was destined to become a writer. I always loved to read and throughout my childhood I could usually be found with a book in my hands. To the disgust of my friends, I even enjoyed creative writing assignments that made them all groan. But I had other dreams besides writing. I wanted to be an actress or a teacher or a lawyer.

Life took a different turn for me, though, when my mother made me take a journalism elective in high school (thanks, Mom!). I knew the first day that this was where I belonged.

After I graduated from college in journalism, I took a job at the local daily newspaper and I reveled in the challenge and the diversity of it. One day I could be interviewing the latest country music star, the next day I was writing about local motorcycle gangs or interviewing an award-winning scientist.

Through it all -- through the natural progression of my career from reporter to editor -- I wrote stories in my head. Not just any stories, either, but romances, the kind of books I have devoured since junior high school, with tales about real people going through the trials and tribulations of life until they find deep and lasting love.

I had no idea how to put these people on paper, but knew I had to try -- their stories were too compelling for me to ignore. I sold my first book in 1995 and now, more than 30 books later, I've come to love everything about writing, from the click of the computer keys under my fingers to the "that's-it!" feeling I get when a story is flowing.

I write full-time now (well, as full-time as I can manage juggling my kids!) amid the raw beauty of the northern Utah mountains.

Even though I might not have dreamed of being a writer when I was younger, now I simply can't imagine my life any other way.

I love to hear from readers. You can reach me at my email address, raeannethayne@gmail.com

Book Blitz & Giveaway - A TALE OF TWO HOUSES by Susan Harris

A Tale of Two Houses
Susan Harris
(Defy the Stars, #1)
Published by: Clean Teen Publishing
Publication date: March 25th 2019
Genres: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Young Adult
Centuries ago, the royal house of witches in Vernanthia split into two factions: House Cambridge and House Montgomery. These two houses warred with each other for an age, causing widespread bloodshed and death. Those without magic—the Nulls—suffered the most. One day, a favored daughter of the Nulls was slain. With her dying breath, she cursed the covens to know no peace until love was possible between the houses.
That curse had long since been forgotten—until now.
Julian Montgomery is the reluctant Prince of House Montgomery and Rowan Cambridge is in no rush to become the Queen of House Cambridge. Both heirs long for freedom from their birthright obligations. When fate throws these two star-crossed lovers together, it sends them on a collision course with destiny that neither could have predicted.
Shakespeare’s classic Romeo & Juliet is reimagined in this compelling drama about two young people drawn by fate into an unwinnable situation. If you think you know how this story ends—think again!

EXCERPT:
“Go talk to her already.”
I jumped at the sound of Toby’s voice, who was grinning at me so much, I could see the white of his teeth.
“Go talk to her already,” he repeated, inclining his head toward the person I’d been staring at. “You’ve been standing there staring at her for quite a while. It’s starting to get weird.”
“I haven’t been staring,” I said with not much conviction as I took a large gulp of my ale.
“Yes, you have. Now is the perfect opportunity to go and ask her to dance. Considering she’s been eyeballing you when she thinks no one is looking, I do not think she will refuse you. Besides, I’m pretty certain the gorgeous creature beside her is the future queen of the Cambridge coven. You go romance her attack dog. Leave the princess to me.”
There was a hint of menace in his tone, a wolfish smile on his face. I put a hand on Toby’s arm. “We will not insult Ashbridge’s invitation by waging war here. It is horrid enough that we are stealing under his nose. Promise me, Toby. No bloodshed here.”
“Unless provoked, my Prince, there will be no bloodshed.”
I lift my arm from Toby’s as the seriousness fled his features. “Now, go get the girl.”
He pushed me forward and I almost stumbled in the dim light, causing me to glare at him for a moment before I rolled my shoulders and prayed that I don’t make an absolute fool of myself. My heart thundered like a drum as I made my way toward the girl, noticing that her eyes were the same color as her dress. My palms were sweating, and I licked my lips to try and rid myself of the dryness.
I stood a mere breath away from her when she turned in my direction, and I could not find the words to speak. Her companion, the girl Toby thought to be the Cambridge heir, giggled, even as Auggie chuckled, a dash of mischief in his eyes. But I blocked them out, my steely focus on the girl with the green eyes and a smile made of sunshine.
“I was wondering, M’lady, if you would dance with me?” I held out my hand, trying to ignore the tremble.

RAMBLINGS & RECIPES - A Murder in the Backyard

Wait!

Don't get your tail feathers in a spin!

I don't mean the bodies-buried-here kind of "murder". No, I'm talking about a group of crows. Apparently, the term "murder" was used to describe a flock of crows as far back as the 15th century.

These birds are not the evil omen that some people think. Some cultures actually consider a crow to be good luck... unless you are a farmer with a crop of corn that the crows have taken a liking to.

Crows (along with ravens and parrots) are actually very intelligent birds, with the biggest brain-to-body size ratio of all the living birds. In lab experiments, they show a degree of cognition similar to that of the great apes. In fact, research has shown that they have a much higher density of neurons in their forebrains than primates do. Huh! Interesting!

I've been here at my daughter's house for the past couple of weeks. These crows show up several times a day, peering in her windows, and sometimes calling her with that familiar "Caw! Caw!". That's because she feeds them. And now they have started to bring her gifts! Little things. A pretty little rock. A bottle cap. I'm just waiting for them to bring her some bling. A diamond earring? A ruby ring?  Hmmm...

Anyway, these crows have very distinct personalities. "Greedy" as she has named him, can fit up to four peanuts in his beak before he flies off. He's the boldest of the bunch... and the biggest.

"Starlight" has a little white spot on the underside of one wing. We haven't named the rest, but there seem to be about six crows in this particular murder. One seems to be nesting, so we haven't seen much of her lately, but Greedy takes food to her. Did you know that crows mate for life? And they make so many different sounds! Sometimes they immitate her dog's barking. And sometimes they sound like they are purring.

There is a lot I didn't know about crows including some interesting Indian legends.

I found several books about crows. Here are just a couple...

In the Company of Crows and Ravens
by John Marzluff and Tony Angell

From the cave walls at Lascaux to the last painting by Van Gogh, from the works of Shakespeare to those of Mark Twain, there is clear evidence that crows and ravens influence human culture. Yet this influence is not unidirectional, say the authors  of this fascinating book: people profoundly influence crow culture, ecology, and evolution as well. Examining the often surprising ways that crows and humans interact, John Marzluff and Tony Angell contend that those interactions reflect a process of “cultural coevolution.” They offer a challenging new view of the human-crow dynamic—a view that may change our thinking not only about crows but also about ourselves.

Featuring more than 100 original drawings, the book takes a close look at the influences people have had on the lives of crows throughout history and at the significant ways crows have altered human lives. In the Company of Crows and Ravens illuminates the entwined histories of crows and people and concludes with an intriguing discussion of the crow-human relationship and how our attitudes toward crows may affect our cultural trajectory. As the authors state in their preface: “Crows and people share similar traits and social strategies. To a surprising extent, to know the crow is to know ourselves."

Gifts of the Crow
by John Marzluff and Tony Angell

Stan Coren’s groundbreaking The Intelligence of Dogs meets Bernd Heinrich’s classic Mind of the Raven in this astonishing, beautifully illustrated look at the uncanny intelligence and emotions of crows.

Playful, social, and passionate, crows have brains that are huge for their body size, which allows them to think, plan, and reconsider their actions. They also exhibit an avian kind of eloquence, mate for life, and associate with relatives and neighbors for years. And to people who care for them and feed them, they often give oddly touching gifts in return.

The ongoing connection between humans and crows—a cultural coevolution—has shaped both species for millions of years. Scientist John Marzluff teams up with artist-naturalist Tony Angell to tell amazing stories of these brilliant birds. With Marzluff’s extraordinary original research on the intelligence and startling abilities of corvids—crows, ravens, and jays—Angell’s gorgeous line drawings, and a lively joint narrative, the authors offer an in-depth look at these complex creatures and the traits and behaviors we share, including language, delinquency, frolic, passion, wrath, risk taking, and awareness. Crows gather around their dead, warn of impending doom, recognize people, commit murder of other crows, lure animals to their death, swill coffee and drink beer, design and use tools—including cars as nutcrackers—and windsurf and sled to play.

With its abundance of funny, awe-inspiring, and poignant stories, Gifts of the Crow portrays creatures who are nothing short of amazing.

Sorry, but no recipe today! When I looked through my vast supply of recipes, all I could think about was the term "eating crow", and although I actually found a couple of recipes for crow, I just couldn't do it. These crows have become pets at my daughter's house! I can't even print out my mother's recipe for pigeon pie. Nope! Not going to do it!

See ya next Sunday for more Ramblings and Recipes!

The blow shouldn’t have stunned me. I’d grown up in a tavern, defending myself, and had spent plenty of time training with Kane and Tem. I knew how to take a hit.
This was more than a hit. Kristoffe’s swing was fast and brutal, with a force behind it that rivaled my own—enough to knock me off my feet and send me flying down the hall.
Sensations took over. There was the feel of backward motion. Loss of control as my body hit the floor. More motion from sliding, and the hot sting of my flesh scraping tile. Ceiling lights blurred into white lines. Pain throbbed in my cheek.
But it was the tightness in my throat that hurt most. The tiger clawed like mad as we slid. Her screams pierced the fog in my brain, parting it, carving out a path. If I didn’t stop her, she would use it to climb up and take control.
Let me in!
I managed to shake my head.
You need me!
“No,” I whimpered, bumping into the limp body of an elevator guard. One of his arms stopped me, and I sat up quickly, recoiling. He was spread-eagled, face down among his comrades, his fingers wrapped around a retinal scanner. I cringed. Was he dead? Had the tiger killed them all? Then my eyes fell on the laser resting at his hip.
Take it.
I couldn’t. I’d never fired one before.
He’ll kill us!
Not sure who she meant, I jerked my head around. The man with the sabre was still gone. But Kristoffe and his patrol were marching in my direction, dragging Toby with them. He struggled violently until one of them drove a fist into his stomach. A savage tug tore through my belly. Gasping, I leaned over, fumbling for the guard’s laser.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Kristoffe signaled for his men to stop, but continued walking toward me. He didn’t waver, not even when I grasped the laser in both hands and aimed it at him.
“That’s far enough,” I said.
He kept coming.
“I’ll shoot.” My finger instinctively hugged the trigger. “I mean it.”
Spreading his arms, Kristoffe made a target out of his broad chest. His smile was icy. “Go ahead, then. Shoot.”
Was he bluffing? I couldn’t tell. He might have a defensive shield. On the other hand, he might go down with one shot. There was no way to know. But somehow, he’d survived the tiger. This laser was my only hope.
Do it, the tiger spat.
My pulse spiked. “I will shoot.”
He kept coming.
Shoot him!
“Stop,” I cried, my hands shaking.
But he didn’t stop, and the closer he came, the harder I choked on the tiger’s fury. Her strength was more than I could handle. He was only a few feet away when her hissing cry forced me to pull the trigger. A matching cry left my lips. The laser clicked, shuddered—
—and died.
