This was my first experience reading this author's work, but it won't be my last. Christopher Greyson's ability to allow the reader to visualize each scene and really get to know each character was outstanding. Although I'm generally not a fan of books involving teenagers, the background information about Jack Stratton really sets the basis for a series of books I can't wait to read.
Jack was abandoned as a small child by his prostitute mother and ended up in the foster care system. Fortunately for him, he ended up in a wonderful foster home with Aunt Haddie and his "brother" Chandler before being adopted by a loving couple.
Seventeen year old Jack has big plans of joining the Army in order to attend college on the GI bill and then join the police department. When a murder takes place and a young man from his old neighborhood is charged, Jack discovers evidence indicating they have the wrong man, but the police don't believe him. That's when Jack takes it upon himself to find the real killer. But doing so could jeopardize Jack's chance of joining the Army or getting on the police force.
This mystery had a number of twists and turns that kept the book interesting. There was a bit of sweet young romance... all very clean. And the strength of "family" was emphasized as well. AND THEN SHE WAS GONE was well written and entertaining. Like I said, I'm not a big fan of teenagers and that reason alone is why I gave this 4 wine glasses instead of 5 (just my humble opinion). I am almost willing to bet that the next book in the series (when Jack is a wee bit older) will be more to my liking. The writing, the scene setting and the character development were all excellent.
Greyson's love of mystery and adventure began with his grandfather, a World War I decorated hero. He will never forget being introduced to his grandfather's friend, a WWI pilot who flew across the skies at the same time as the feared legendary Red Baron. Since he was a little boy, Christopher Greyson dreamt of what mystery was around the next corner, or quest lay over the hill. If he couldn't find an adventure, one usually found him! Now he weaves those tales into his stories.
Christopher Greyson's educational background is an eclectic mix of degrees in Computer Science, Theatre and Communications. He resides in Massachusetts with his lovely wife, Katherine Greyson, author of the bestselling romance-mystery series Everyone Keeps Secrets and their two wonderful children, Laura and Christopher.
