Book Review - Honey Kisses (Romance on the Ranch Series - Book 2) by Verna Clay

Title:  Honey Kisses (Romance on the Ranch, - Book 2)
Author:  Verna Clay
Genre:  Romance, Westerns
Release Date:  March 4, 2012

About the Book:

Romance on the Ranch Series: Dream Kisses; Honey Kisses; Baby Kisses; Candy Kisses; Christmas Kisses; Rock Star Kisses; Forever Kisses, Forgotten Kisses, Angel Kisses, The Last Kiss

Ann Hackstetter first met Jackson Martinez while vacationing at Lazy M Dude Ranch with her husband and teenage son. Part of the "dude" package was a night of fun at Boot Bustin' Barn. At the time, Ann suspected that Sage Tanner, owner of Lazy M, bribed Jackson to ask her to dance as a way of making her inattentive husband jealous. On a whim, she danced with him. Little did she realize he would awaken emotions long suppressed. Of course, she ignored those emotions. Now, five years later, she's a widow--a destitute widow. Over the years, her son's friendship with Sage's daughter, Julie, has blossomed, and now they're getting married. Wedding responsibilities have temporarily taken Ann's mind off her desperate situation. At the reception, Jackson asks her to dance again--reawakening those emotions. He makes her feel twenty-one, instead of forty-one.

Jackson Martinez has an easy way with the women, but the one woman who sets his heart to racing is Annie Hackstetter. She's older, has a grown son, and probably has an aversion to men after being married to a jerk. When Sage reveals Annie's sad state of economic affairs and says she's looking for a job, Jackson knows his heart is in trouble when he offers her a position managing his household so he can concentrate on running his cattle ranch. Unknown to him, or anyone else, Annie has a secret.

My Review:

There is so much to love about this book.  The romance is sweet.  It's the kind of romance that gives you tingles and wanting more.  Verna Clay does that.  Every. Single. Time.

Ann Hackstetter's louse of a husband dies, leaving her penniless, insurance cancelled and her home heavily mortgaged due to his gambling.  This leaves Ann homeless and needing a job but the only thing she thinks she can do is housekeeping.  It just so happens, however, that Jackson is in need of a person to run his household on his ranch, and he has had his eye on Ann for a long time... for more than just her cleaning abilities.

SPOILER HERE - Don't read this paragraph if you don't want to know!  Things seem to be looking up for Ann until she's confronted by a bad man who claims Ann's husband died without repaying a big debt to him.  When Ann explains that she has no money, the man forces her to get the money from her wealthy friend.  That's when Ann does the unthinkable.  She hacks into Jackson's computer and steals $50,000.  Oh my!  That's also when I almost stopped listening to the Audible version of the book I was listening to.  How could she steal from such a great guy!  Jackson is Mr. Perfect!  But I'm so glad I didn't give up because things had a way of working out, but not the way you would expect.  Ann redeems herself by working with the FBI as an exotic dancer and computer hacker to put the bad guys out of business.

The beginning of the book was a bit slow to start, but when things heated up they heated up fast.

My Review:

Christmas Kisses is a quick read novella that's filled with holiday spirit.  Although this is actually Book #5 in the Romance on the Ranch series, it can absolutely be read as a stand-alone.  There were moments that brought tears to my eyes, but I would still say that this is definitely a "feel good" book.

While delivering the morning coffee and pastry to Paxtonville's "mystery man", Cecilia slips and falls near his front steps.  Rushing to her rescue, Mac helps Cecilia inside to tend to her scrapes.  That's when Cecilia learns that the identy of this mystery man is actually an artist she has admired for a long time.  Keeping his secret as he requested, Cecilia soon becomes someone very special to Mac and when he needs help at home after his surgery, Cecilia agrees to move in temporarily. Okay... no more spoilers. You need to read this to see how love unfolds and two people find what they need most in life. Maybe I should say that you'll see what four people need most in life.

Yes, Verna Clay has done it again.  I love this author's feel-good romances that give me tingles and show that there are some really good people in the worlds she creates. The end seemed a bit rushed and the beginning had a lot of back-story that dragged a bit, but even with that, I loved the book and would highly recommend it for a holiday read.

My Review:

Verna Clay is one of my favorite authors for sweet romance novels. She has an ability to create scenes that come to life and characters you can't help but to love.

Somewhere by the Sea is Book #1 in a series set in the town of Somewhere, Oregon.  After staring at a picture of this sweet town for years, Faith Bennison decides it is time for her to move on and create a new life for herself after the death of her husband and young son.  In Somewhere, she meets some delightful characters including Gabby, the lady who owns the B&B Faith decides to stay at for the summer, and her handsome son, Baxter.

When Faith starts seeing and talking to Owen, a young boy who died twenty years ago, anger and distrust begin to appear and could ruin Faith's friendship with Vickie and any budding relationship Faith and Baxter may have.

Although some plot lines start to wind up, we are left with that urge to keep reading and desperately looking for Book #2 in this series.

Not my favorite of Verna's books, but it is a great beginning to a new series and a great summer read.

My Review:

Let me start by saying that I'm a big fan of Verna Clay.  I absolutely love her historical romance novels. This one was a bit different, but it was still enjoyable.  Perhaps the movement from Tom in one chapter to Tana in the next kept the book from flowing the way her books generally flow.  But all in all, it was still good.

Verna Clay is a master at portraying history in her novels.  This one also included superb geography!  I say that because I lived for several years in Arizona and her description and explanations regarding Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, Superstition Mountain, the lost Dutchman and his gold mine, and Montezuma Castle brought back many memories.  She introduced many characters from the old west who were made famous in Arizona.

This story was somewhat slow moving as Tom and Amy traveled to find the healing woman, with numerous little adventures along the way.  I think I was just anxious for them to find Tana and I was anxious for love tingles to start developing.  Not enough of those tingles that I have so thoroughly enjoyed in Verna's other stories.  But that may not have been her goal with this book.  She did provide the reader with tons of interesting information.  I loved all the Indian lore!

Healing Woman of the Red Rocks is the first book in the Red Rocks Trilogy: Past, Present, Future, and I am anxious to read more.

Book Review: Hallie: Cry of the West (Finding Home Series - Book 1) by Verna Clay

Title:  Hallie: Cry of the West (Finding Home Series)
Author:  Verna Clay
Genre:  Historic Romance
Publisher:  Self Published
Release Date:  January 8, 2014

From the Back Cover:

Recently widowed, Hallie Wells is facing a tough situation. The sudden demise of her husband after selling their farm and just about everything they owned to travel west on the Oregon Trail, has left her in a bind. Dare she ask Cooper Jerome, recently returned from the War of the States, if he would put his life on hold for, say, five months to drive her wagon, and that doesn't include his return trip. At this point, she's out of options.

From the Author:  Writing Hallie's story has been a labor of love. For a long time I had contemplated writing a book encompassing the Oregon Trail, and the more research I did as the story unfolded, the more I fell in love with the pioneers who gave up everything to follow their dreams and the Native Americans adversely affected by westward migration. The hardships endured by both groups are unimaginable.

In writing this story, I am in no way attempting to typify the lives of those who braved the Oregon Trail or the Native Americans affected. My story has been written solely as romantic entertainment, but with the added aspect of research.

The Oregon Trail began in Missouri, not far from St. Louis, and crossed in greater or lesser degrees, the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. For much of the trail's history, however, these states were considered territories. In the time frame of my book, 1866, Oregon was already a state of the Union, as was Kansas.

Since many of there views I receive on my other books request longer stories, I made sure to give these characters lots of adventure, romance, and challenges to lengthen their tale.

My Review:

Another great western romance by one of my favorite authors, Verna Clay. This one focused on a widow who had recently sold her ranch and had planned to travel west with her husband and son when her husband was suddenly killed and she and her son were pretty much left homeless.  Hallie decides to continue on with their dream of traveling to Oregon with a wagon train.  Since she didn't think she could handle the trip alone, she hired Cooper Jerome to assist her.  Along the trail, love develops and working through the relationship becomes almost unbearable for both of them.

I loved the sparks between the two and the tingles of passion that sprouted from time to time.  It certainly left me wanting more!  There was a lot that happened along the trail, some of which didn't really add much to the story line and was probably unnecessary, but I enjoyed the story just the same.

This may not have been my favorite of Verna Clay's books, but it was still a good read and I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a western romance series.  This author does an excellent job of world building.  So much so that I could easily envision the mountains, plains and rivers in my mind as this group of pioneers ventured west.

My Review:

This was exactly the kind of story I was in the mood for!  Hot sexy cowboy... romance... lots of tingles.

Sarah Carter, a popular romance author writing under the pen name Mims Murphy, is still hurting from her divorce from her philandering ex-husband.  Upon meeting hot, hunky, extremely sexy, cowboy Sage Tanner, who is modeling for the cover of her upcoming new novel, she immediately pegs him as a "player" and wants nothing to do with him... no matter how hot and sexy he is.  The last thing she wants is to get involved with another man like her ex-husband and she makes that very clear to him.  Sage, on the other hand, is sick and tired of superficial women throwing themselves at him, and becomes intrigued with Sarah.

After signing up to spend several weeks at a dude ranch in order to do some research for her novel, the unsuspecting Sarah discovers that the dude ranch is actually owned by none other than the sexy, hot cowboy, Sage.

This was a fun contemporary romance that made me smile and provided so many of those "tingles" I love to get from a romance novel.  No heavy sex scenes, just lots and lots of tingles.  And the ending was so heart warming that my cheeks hurt from smiling so hard.  I absolutely LOVED it!

This was a quick read of only 149 pages.  Normally, I don't feel like that is enough to fully develop a story or the characters, unless you have an exceptional author.  Verna Clay is such an author... one who can pull you into the story and also create some amazingly wonderful characters... not just the main characters, but the supporting characters as well.

Thank you, Verna!

Book Review: Abby: Mail Order Bride (Unconventional Series - Book 1) by Verna Clay

Title:  Abby: Mail Order Bride (Unconventional Series, Book 1)

Publisher:  M.O.I Publishing
Release Date:  January 5, 2014

After reading Mr. Samson's classified advertisement in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Abigail Mary Vaughn garners enough courage to respond. My Review:

This was a quick read, probably because I simply couldn't put it down.  I was sucked into the story right away and stayed there until the very end.  I love these sweet historical romance novels, especially when you find an author who knows how to develop the characters to be someone with whom you can truly find a connection.

Abigail Mary Vaughn has spent most of her life caring for her elderly parents.  When they die, Abby finds herself quite alone.  When she decides to reply to an advertisement for a bride, she soon finds herself traveling from Philadelphia to a small town in Texas.  Brant Samson, who lost his wife a couple of years earlier, was doing his best to raise his three children and run his ranch.  Although the attraction was immediate as Abby stepped off the stagecoach, the romance built slowly, and was beautifully written.  Aside from the beautiful romance that developed, this was a story about loss and letting go.  A story about holding past loved ones near your heart but continuing to live your life and finding that you can love again.

There are moments of great joy in this novel, but there are also moments of great tragedy.  If you don't have a box of tissues handy, I suggest you not read this until you do.  This is at least a 3 tissue read!  So be prepared.  It does end with a HEA (happily ever after, for those of you who don't know what that means), but I don't want to give up any spoilers.

This is the first book I have read that was written by Verna Clay and I must say that I am intrigued.  Yes, I love historical romance, but I especially love a book that brings the characters to life for me.  And Verna Clay does this beautifully.  After getting a sneak peak at the next book in this series, I know that I will be reaching for another one very soon.
