Book Review - Season of Wonder (Haven Point Series - Book 9) by RaeAnne Thayne

Title: Season of Wonder
Author: RaeAnne Thayne
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Women's Fiction, Holiday
Publisher: Harlequin Books
Release Date: September 25, 2018

About the Book:

It’s a long way from New York to Idaho…but could they have found a home at last?

Dani Capelli has never truly belonged anywhere. And from her earliest days as a foster child in Queens, she would have been lost if it weren’t for her love of animals. Until high school, when she fell hard for the wrong boy, and found herself pregnant—and married—by graduation. Two daughters later, Dani realized her mistake and filed for divorce, and with the help of scholarships and loans—and a lot of macaroni and cheese dinners—she enrolled in vet school. Things were finally looking up…until her ex-husband became her late husband, in the most notorious way possible.

Now Dani and her daughters need an out-of-town pass more than ever. So when the retiring Haven Point veterinarian offers her a chance to settle in the small Idaho town and take over his practice, she jumps at it. But adjusting to the charming mountain community isn’t easy; thirteen-year-old Silver begins acting out while six-year-old Mia is growing tooattached to Haven Point and everything in it, especially their next-door-neighbor, Deputy Sheriff Ruben Morales. And Dani can’t blame her. Ruben is everything she’s secretly wanted—and everything she can’t bear to risk loving…and losing.

As the holidays draw near, their shared concern for Dani’s daughters brings them closer together, giving Ruben the chance to show this big-city woman just how magical Christmas in Haven Point can be...and that the promise of a home at last is very real in the most wondrous season of the year…

My Review:

Although this is Book 9 in the Haven Point series, each book can be read as a stand-alone. But it's nice seeing some characters from previous books in this series too. It makes you feel like you know just about everyone in this small Idaho town of Haven Point.

Unlike many of RaeAnne Thayne's other books, this one took me awhile to really get into it. However, I must say that Deputy Ruben Morales made my heart go pitter-patter from the first moment he walked into the veterinary clinic. The chemistry between Ruben and Dani is instantaneous, but Dani's past keeps her at a distance and somewhat anti-social.  It takes a bad choice made by Silver, Dani's teenage daughter, to bring Ruben and Dani together.  My second favorite character was little Mia, Dani's youngest daughter, who could melt your heart in a flash.

Season of Wonder is a nice Christmas story.  Between the tree trimming, the boat parade, and the twelve days of Christmas secret plan, this was a nice light read for the holidays.

About the Author:
I'm not one of those people who knew from birth she was destined to become a writer. I always loved to read and throughout my childhood I could usually be found with a book in my hands. To the disgust of my friends, I even enjoyed creative writing assignments that made them all groan. But I had other dreams besides writing. I wanted to be an actress or a teacher or a lawyer.

Life took a different turn for me, though, when my mother made me take a journalism elective in high school (thanks, Mom!). I knew the first day that this was where I belonged.

After I graduated from college in journalism, I took a job at the local daily newspaper and I reveled in the challenge and the diversity of it. One day I could be interviewing the latest country music star, the next day I was writing about local motorcycle gangs or interviewing an award-winning scientist.

Through it all -- through the natural progression of my career from reporter to editor -- I wrote stories in my head. Not just any stories, either, but romances, the kind of books I have devoured since junior high school, with tales about real people going through the trials and tribulations of life until they find deep and lasting love.

I had no idea how to put these people on paper, but knew I had to try -- their stories were too compelling for me to ignore. I sold my first book in 1995 and now, more than 30 books later, I've come to love everything about writing, from the click of the computer keys under my fingers to the "that's-it!" feeling I get when a story is flowing.

I write full-time now (well, as full-time as I can manage juggling my kids!) amid the raw beauty of the northern Utah mountains.

Even though I might not have dreamed of being a writer when I was younger, now I simply can't imagine my life any other way.

I love to hear from readers. You can reach me at my email address, raeannethayne@gmail.com

My Review:
As the end of July rapidly approached I realized I had not reviewed one single Christmas-in-July book. That's when Author Deborah Cooke graciously offered a copy of this adorable little Christmas novella to me.  And what a delight this book turned out to be!

A Berry Merry Christmas is all Christmas!  From the start in Santa's village to the sweet, naive little elf named Holly, to the letter to Santa from little Natalie, to the home baked Christmas cookies, to the kiss from Drew under the mistletoe, this little novella packed a whole lot of Christmas into these pages!  Deborah Cooke, writing as Claire Cross, created such loveable characters that I wanted to reach right into the pages and hug them.

This was a quick read of a little over a hundred pages, but I could easily see this being turned into a Hallmark Christmas movie.  Delightful!

My Review:

Christmas Kisses is a quick read novella that's filled with holiday spirit.  Although this is actually Book #5 in the Romance on the Ranch series, it can absolutely be read as a stand-alone.  There were moments that brought tears to my eyes, but I would still say that this is definitely a "feel good" book.

While delivering the morning coffee and pastry to Paxtonville's "mystery man", Cecilia slips and falls near his front steps.  Rushing to her rescue, Mac helps Cecilia inside to tend to her scrapes.  That's when Cecilia learns that the identy of this mystery man is actually an artist she has admired for a long time.  Keeping his secret as he requested, Cecilia soon becomes someone very special to Mac and when he needs help at home after his surgery, Cecilia agrees to move in temporarily. Okay... no more spoilers. You need to read this to see how love unfolds and two people find what they need most in life. Maybe I should say that you'll see what four people need most in life.

Yes, Verna Clay has done it again.  I love this author's feel-good romances that give me tingles and show that there are some really good people in the worlds she creates. The end seemed a bit rushed and the beginning had a lot of back-story that dragged a bit, but even with that, I loved the book and would highly recommend it for a holiday read.

About the Author:

My perfect day: coffee shop; laptop; WiFi availability; java mocha; characters demanding their stories be told; a plot that comes together; and hours to live in an alternate reality.

Seriously, I have always loved reading, and now I love writing. As a preteen, I devoured Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Mysteries, but when I reached my teen years the romance genre became my favorite, and that has never changed. After years of procrastinating, I tried my hand at writing and I've been doing so with a passion ever since. I have written over twenty-five romance novels and novellas in the genres of contemporary western, historical western, general contemporary, and fantasy. Because I hate saying goodbye to characters who have lived with me for months, I usually create a series so they can be revisited from book to book. I have also written a Young Adult novella titled "Fragile Hearts" using the pen name of Colleen Clay.

My Review:

Here it is the first day of December, so I thought I'd try to get in as many holiday reads as possible before all the confusion and madness starts.  A Christmas Masquerade was a delightful quick read. The story is quite short but Melissa H. North filled those pages with love, humor, goodness and Christmas spirit. This was Christmas Steampunk at its finest, and it certainly put me in the Christmas spirit. Portions of the story almost read like Charles Dickens, but with a definite twist.

Kingsley Radcliffe is a man with a heart of gold, a man who lives the Christmas spirit each and every day. When he receives a mysterious Christmas gift containing a riddle, he and his friend Ezra and Ezra's dog, Droolious (Gosh, I love that name for a dog!), embark on a scavenger hunt that takes them on a Christmas Eve adventure, stopping from time to time to provide Christmas cheer to others. No spoilers here as to where they end up, but the journey was fun and eventful and the outcome was delightful. I was sorry that this story ended so quickly because I was so enjoying reading it. Melissa H. North created a beautifully constructed world with descriptions that allowed this reader to visualize everything as if I was right there, making me feel the warmth and compassion of someone with a true Christmas heart and a bit of humor with the steampunk additives and delightful names of people and places. And that's difficult to do with such a short story! Congratulations to a very talented author.  A Christmas Masquerade was the first book I've read from this author, but I certainly intend to read more from her.

My Review:

Once again, Debbie Macomber gives us a delightful story with loveable characters.  This was a quick read that I finished in one afternoon.  Perhaps that was because I was unable to put it down.

Merry Knight takes on a temporary job working long hours to help pay for next year's college tuition, all the while helping out at home with her mother who has multiple sclerosis and her brother with Down's Syndrome,  Her life has become so busy that she has had no time for a social life.  That's when her mother and brother come up with a plan to have Merry join an internet dating website.  When they tell Merry what they had done, Merry couldn't get angry with them because she knew they were only trying to help.  Instead of a picture of herself, she decided to use a picture of their dog.  Then when she receives a response from a man who also posts a picture of a dog instead of himself, she becomes intrigued and a fondness developes.  After weeks of corresponding, they plan to meet in person.  That's when Merry discovers who this man really is and she quickly leaves before he sees her.

One of the things I liked about this story is that neither Merry nor Jayson lied... other than not posting their true names.  And even though I just knew how the story would end, it still didn't keep me from cheering for this HEA,  And the characters!  Oh how I loved sweet Patrick!  Even though Jayson wasn't all that loveable in the beginning, as I learned his history and his personal story, and as I saw how he changed after getting to know Merry/Mary, I started loving him as well.

This is such a great Christmas story.  Debbie Macomber has a way of making you feel the joy and excitement with each Christmas carol sung and each decoration described.  "Merry and Bright" would make a great Christmas gift for all your reader friends.

My Review:

My craving for all things Victorian has been indulged!  This book had so much of what I love within its pages… Mystery, History, Holiday, Drama, Twists and Turns and Sweet Romance… all with a hint of Christianity.  And that history was right on target with a bonus of some historical clarifications toward the back of the book.  Thank you Michelle Griep for that too!

Once I started reading, I could not put this book down.  Not extremely lengthy, but just enough to be thorough with the story.  Charles Dickens would be proud!

Set in London in 1850, Clara Chapman's life had taken a downward turn having lost her fortune and being left at the alter, abandoned by the man she loved.  Then she received an invitation.  If she can stay at Bleakly Manor for twelve nights she will be given a large sum of money.  Clara's ailing aunt encourages her to accept.

Upon arriving at Bleakly Manor, Clara realizes she is not the only person to receive such an invitation, each with a reward geared just for them.  One of those invitee's is none other than Ben Lane, the man accused of embezzlement and destroying Clara's father's business... and the man who had left her standing at the alter.  Unbeknownst to Clara, Ben had actually been imprisoned unjustly all these months.

Michelle Griep created a wonderful assortment of characters, and a mystery with lots of twists and turns.  Who is their host?  Which of the houseguests will remain to win their prize?

I would love to see a Christmastime movie made from this novel.  And this is just Book #1 of the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series.  I can't wait to read the next one!

My Review:

"The 13th Gift" is not that big of a book, but it took me the entire month to finish it, even though I'm one of those readers who generally finishes a book in one or two days.  At one point, I listed this book as DNF (did not finish).  Why?  Because it started out so heart-wrenching that I was either getting really depressed, crying or getting really angry at the mother in the story.

This is a true story of how a family was dealing with the loss of the husband/father.  He had died at Christmastime the previous year, which made this Christmas very difficult to get through.  Then the gifts started coming.  Not expensive gifts, just simple Christmasy gifts on their doorstep with a mysterious note each day.  Gifts for each day of the twelve days of Christmas.  The family came together little by little, and began looking forward to the next day.

The sentiment and warmth that shows through in strangers and friends and the family as well, gives you the real sense of what Christmas is all about.

I can't say that I loved the book.  It was well written, but far too emotional for me.  I know that there are others who would find this heartwarming instead of heart-wrenching.

My Review:

This was a fun, quick read, with romance that gives you tingles and plenty of Christmas magic.  The characters are delightful and lovable.  OKLAHOMA CHRISTMAS BLUES certainly put me smack dab in the Christmas spirit.. even in the middle of July!

Sophia learns from Santa that whatever has happened to her, no matter how bad it might have been, these things have caused her to now be right where she is supposed to be. Things happen for a reason.  All you need to do is believe.  And it seems that Darryl learns that same lesson as well.

This was a quick read of only 176 pages, but it was quite enjoyable.  Not a lot of depth, but very nice for a Christmas story and after reading this I will probably check out the other two books in this series. And I would love to meet this author!  She describes herself as a storyteller, and aside from her awesome writing style, she sounds like a fascinating person!

I am Maggie Shayne and I am a Goddess. And so are you.

I am the matriarch of a clan of amazing young women, all of whom are catching up to my age, because I long ago decided to stop counting.

I have come to a place of serenity and wisdom I never dreamed I would possess back when I thought I already knew everything.

I spent years studying witchcraft, became a priestess, and then a high priestess, and then an elder, and then, by the Old Law, a Witch Queen. I’ve jumped the bonfire on Solstice Eve, and drummed the night away while witches danced. But my spell casting lately consists of deciding what I want, and it arrives. No poof of purple smoke or glitter. But I’m working on that. Magic is just an expression of the universal law of attraction, you see.

I was born a storyteller, and I will cross the other side a storyteller, and when I get there, I’ll haunt some young writer who’s still on earth by whispering my stories into her ears, because I’ll still be a story teller. I think that’s what our muses are. Storytellers gone by. I am so incredibly blessed, because I got a really good one. I love her.

For 22 years, I wrote stories that were published by major houses in New York City. I wrote soaps for a year, Guiding Light and As the World Turns. (It wasn’t anywhere near as much fun as it sounds.)

I published more than 60 novels with Harlequin, Berkley, Avon, St. Martin’s Press, Pocket Books and others. But things started to change. I started to change. I was chafing at the bit. They stopped letting me write what I wanted to write. They started axing my proposals and suggesting their own. It wasn’t fun anymore. I wasn’t happy anymore.

The signals were clear, but I’d been doing the same thing the same way for a long time, and I didn’t take the hints right away. It got a lot more unpleasant before I finally had no choice but to walk away. It was March 1st, 2014. And it was one of the most terrifying things I have ever done.
I took a leap of faith, and a net appeared. The net’s name was Jessica, one of my daughters, who said, “It’s about time, Mom. Now I’m gonna make you a million bucks.”

I set up my own business. I stepped into my own power. I convinced myself that I could learn whatever needed to be learned, and I was right about that.

My middle daughter Jessica jumped into action and taught herself ebook formatting and graphic design. (And a thousand more things since then. She is brilliant.) We started formatting my old books whose rights had reverted back to me and releasing them ourselves.

I kept writing new books, too. My firstborn, Jena, became my editor. Both girls have Masters in English and education. (I don’t have any degree at all, and I’m so proud that all 5 of my girls do!) Jena was and still is teaching full time, but she found time to edit, and not just for me, but for other authors too. Jessica used her new skills to help other authors, as well. And now they both have thriving businesses just like I do.

I have achieved more success and made more money since I left traditional publishing than I ever even dreamed. And I have never ever had more fun. And the fun is the key. The fun is why the success is flowing in. Working with my own daughters, writing what I want to write, helping to design my own covers, creating my own launch campaigns and ad campaigns and anything-I-want campaigns, connecting one-on-one with my readers, no middle man in between us. It’s FUN.

And not only are Jena’s and Jessica’s businesses thriving, but now two other daughters have jumped in, River and Miranda. They and Jessica are each writing series of their own, set in my Oklahoma Brands towns of Big Falls and Tucker Lake. Moreover, my second born, Katie, will soon be joining us, meaning all my girls will be working in the business with me. That’s a dream come true all by itself!

I am in the most blissful time of my entire life at just a little (barely a minute, I swear!) past 50. I found my spiritual partner, co-creator, soulmate Lance and we married on Valentine’s Day 2014. I am happier, more confident, healthier, wealthier, more fulfilled, and more serene than I have ever been. All my dreams are coming true. I have a waterfall in my back yard! A freakin’ waterfall. And I’m wiser than ever before. I know things now.

Above all else, I am empowered. I have become the creator and controller of my own Life. And let me tell you, girls, it’s good to be the Queen.

I am a storyteller, first and foremost. My stories are Paranormal Romances like my groundbreaking Wings in the Night vampire romance series, (the original “twilight” vampire books) and several series about Witches and other bumps in the night.

My stories are Contemporary Western Romances all about family and heart and loyalty and love, like The Texas Brands Series, the Oklahoma All-Girl Brands, and The McIntyre Men.

My stories are Romantic Thrillers like my career-best Brown & de Luca series, The Mordecai Young Series, The Secrets of Shadow Falls, Shattered Sisters, and more.

I also write and blog and teach the Law of Attraction or what I like to call Witchcraft without the props. You can find my non-fiction teachings about how you can become the Queen and Goddess of your own life and business, and create everything you want, at BlissBlog.org

I love who I am, what I do, and everything about my life. I especially love my readers, because, let’s face it, storytelling would be pretty pointless without them. You. I love knowing you as much as possible, which is why I am available to you via email, Facebook, Twitter, my newsletter and my blogs.

So pick a story, any story, and then curl up in a comfy chair, and wrap your softest blanket around your shoulders. Fill your favorite mug with your favorite warm beverage, coffee or tea or cocoa, and fall into my world for a little while. I think you’re gonna like it here.
Hugs!
Maggie
