Book Review: Growing Houseplants for the Beginner Enthusiast by Cyril G. Bursell

Title:  Growing Houseplants for the Beginner Enthusiast
Author:  Cyril G. Bursell
Genre:  Nonfiction
Publisher: Self-Published
Release Date:  January 19, 2014

About the Book:

At one time or another most everyone had a plant or two in their house or apartment. If you have a bit of a green thumb, your plants grew and offered you hours of enjoyment. Heck, perhaps you even had a name for each plant. Yes, you are indeed the talented ones who can grow just about anything anywhere.

Then there is the beginner houseplant owner who with the best of intention looked on in dismay as they watched their plants slowly wither away eventually becoming nothing more than a dried stick. It is for you guys and gals who have little or no knowledge on how to keep a houseplant alive I have written this book.

Our journey will take you through what kind of plants are best for your home and what you need to know to keep them healthy and vibrant.

You will also learn which plants are toxic to children and pets as well as which plants are safe for your home.

As a beginner houseplant owner you might feel a little overwhelmed with so much information. Therefore, I have added a handy tip sheet near the end of the book you can print from your computer and keep as a handy reference.

For those Kindle owners whose Kindle readers are in black and white, I have included a link to my web site where you can see full color pictures of most of the plants discussed in this book.

It is my hope that by the time you finish reading this book, you too will have developed your green thumb and grow vibrant houseplants that will be the envy of everyone who visits your home.

My Review:

I know that most of the readers of this blog usually find a much different variety of books that we have reviewed.  But every now and then I find a little gem that I really want to share.

This is a great little book that gives you perfect basic information about growing houseplants. I'm one of those people who loves live plants, but a week after I bring one home from the store the poor pitiful little thing starts drooping or turning brown. I feel like an executioner when it comes to houseplants.

Cyril G. Bursell gives quality advice on what to do and what to buy in a friendly matter-of-fact way. I was especially fascinated by the number of poisonous plants he listed. Wow! Who knew? (Hey, you authors who write murder mysteries, take note!)

Another thing I loved about this book is the extra pages for taking notes. Great idea!

*Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Although a review was not required in exchange for this book, I felt compelled to do so after reading it. All thoughts, comments and ratings are my own.

My Rating:

About the Author:

I am a bit of an old codger who has seen my share of life and and now I devote most of my retirement years tending my garden patch. It's probably the one thing I did get a good handle on throughout my years of life.

I don't tend to be much of an expert on most things in life, but I do know a thing or two about gardening.

During the spring and through until fall, I am mostly found out tending to my vegetable garden patch.

For a gardener, then comes the long dreary months waiting for spring to arrive and yes, back out to prepare my garden for planting.

I do however, put the winter months to good use by adding new articles for beginner gardeners on my website

Recently, I decided to try my hand writing books for the beginner gardener, and just recently published my first book on Amazon titled "Growing House Plants for the Beginner Enthusiast."

I do hope you find it informative to help you keep your indoor plants healthy and vibrant.

What now? Well, I am starting a new book yes, for the beginner on "How to Grow a Successful Vegetable Garden."

But that may have to wait for a while as spring has arrived hear in Arizona and you'll know where I'll be.
