Book Review - SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT by Darynda Jones

Title:  Second Grave on the Left (Charley Davidson, Book 2)
Author:  Darynda Jones
Genre:  Mystery, Suspense, Thriller
Release Date:  August 16, 2011

About the Book:

Second in the Darynda Jones' award-winning paranormal series that's "hilarious and heartfelt, sexy and surprising." (J.R. Ward)
When Charley Davidson and Cookie (her best friend/receptionist) have to track down a missing woman, the case is not quite as open and shut as they anticipate. A friend of Cookie's named Mimi disappeared five days earlier. This friend then sends Cookie a cryptic message telling them to meet her at a nearby coffee shop. The coffee is brewing, but Mimi's still missing. There is, however, a clue left on the bathroom wall: a woman's name, scribbled by Mimi. Mimi's husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.
Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He's left his body because he's being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can't let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they'll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let's just say it wouldn't be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Can she keep those she loves out of harm's way? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel her as she does?
Here is your signpost for the most hilarious read of the summer: Second Grave On The Left.

My Review:
After reading her first book in this series, I could not wait to read more! I downloaded the Audible version in preparation of a road trip I was getting ready to take.  Loved it!!

Charley Davidson is just as snarky, sassy and tough in this book as she was in Book 1! Fabulous character, but how could she not be? She sees dead people. I absolutely love this character!  There was not as much of the heat we saw in Book 1, but Reyes was somewhat occupied throughout most of this book... fighting demons in order to protect Charley and the rest of the world.  But we did get just as much humor.

Darynda Jones has created a series that is totally entertaining! Great writing, great characters, great storyline! I can't wait to read more from this author.

My Review:

ACCIDENTAL LEIGH is a quick read that you can finish in just a few hours. It's somewhat of an introduction of books to follow in this series I believe, because it left off with a bit of a cliff hanger. I mean, it just stopped. I was hoping for another chapter to find out what happens, but I guess that will be discussed in Book 2 of this series.  First of all, if adult content and not-so-nice language bothers you, you may not want to start reading this book. But if you're okay with all of that, this book will have you chuckling and maybe even giggling like a school girl! The humor was great!

After getting upset that her favorite author killed off Leigh's "book boyfriend", she decides she wants to write a romance novel herself and buys an antique writing desk from an old lady. Then, as she writes, she discovers that the events in her book actually happen to friends and family. Can't wait to see where all of this goes!

Book Review - STUCK IN MANISTIQUE by Dennis Cuesta

Title:  Stuck in Manistique
Author:  Dennis Cuesta
Genre:  Humor, Contemporary Fiction
Release Date:  October 29, 2018

About the Book:

Near the midpoint of the Upper Peninsula, along a Lake Michigan bend of shore, is the town of Manistique, Michigan. Mark had never heard of Manistique before the death of his estranged aunt, but as sole beneficiary of Vivian's estate, he travels there to settle her affairs. As Mark tours his aunt's house for the first time, the doorbell rings.
Days after graduating medical school, Dr. Emily Davis drives north, struggling with her illicit rendezvous on Mackinac Island. She never makes it—on the highway near Manistique, her car collides with a deer, shattering the car's windshield. Stranded for the night, Emily is directed to a nearby bed and breakfast.
Maybe it's a heady reaction, the revelation that his aunt, an international aid doctor, ran a bed and breakfast in retirement. Or perhaps he plainly feels pity for the young, helpless doctor. Regardless, Mark decides to play host for one night, telling Emily that he's merely stepping in temporarily while his aunt is away.
As a one-night stay turns into another and more guests arrive, the ersatz innkeeper steadily loses control of his story. And though Emily opens up to Mark, she has trouble explaining the middle-aged man who unexpectedly arrives at the doorstep looking for her.
Will these two strangers, holding on to unraveling secrets, remain in town long enough to discover the connection between them?

My Review:

Perhaps it's because my father's family lives in the UP and I could picture every bridge, lake and street sign. Or perhaps it's because I was raised eating pasties. Or perhaps it's because Stuck in Manistique was simply a delight to read. Whatever it was, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this debut novel from an author who deserves a standing ovation.

I found this book to be thoroughly entertaining. I not only smiled, but laughed out loud several times. There were a few dramatic moments too and a couple of heartbreaking moments, but the characters were quirky and dynamic and loveable.

I hope to see more from this author in the future. Perhaps a continuation of this story? I would love to read about more guests at this B&B. And, my oh my, would I ever love to stay there!

Disclosure:  A complimentary ARC was provided by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

Book Review - SWEET TEA AND SYMPATHY by Molly Harper

Title:  Sweet Tea and Sympathy
Author:  Molly Harper
Genre:  Literary Fiction, Humor, Romance
Release Date:   November 21, 2017

About the Book:
Beloved author Molly Harper launches a brand-new contemporary romance series, Southern Eclectic, with this story of a big-city party planner who finds true love in a small Georgia town.

Nestled on the shore of Lake Sackett, Georgia is the McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop. (What, you have a problem with one-stop shopping?) Two McCready brothers started two separate businesses in the same building back in 1928, and now it’s become one big family affair. And true to form in small Southern towns, family business becomes everybody’s business.

Margot Cary has spent her life immersed in everything Lake Sackett is not. As an elite event planner, Margot’s rubbed elbows with the cream of Chicago society, and made elegance and glamour her business. She’s riding high until one event goes tragically, spectacularly wrong. Now she’s blackballed by the gala set and in dire need of a fresh start—and apparently the McCreadys are in need of an event planner with a tarnished reputation.

As Margot finds her footing in a town where everybody knows not only your name, but what you had for dinner last Saturday night and what you’ll wear to church on Sunday morning, she grudgingly has to admit that there are some things Lake Sackett does better than Chicago—including the dating prospects. Elementary school principal Kyle Archer is a fellow fish-out-of-water who volunteers to show Margot the picture-postcard side of Southern living. The two of them hit it off, but not everybody is happy to see an outsider snapping up one of the town's most eligible gentleman. Will Margot reel in her handsome fish, or will she have to release her latest catch?

My Review:
As a southern girl myself, I found SWEET TEA AND SYMPATHY totally delightful. This book will have you smiling and perhaps even laughing out loud.

Margot is a city girl with a problem. When an event she was planning goes totally wrong, she is given the boot and finds herself unemployed and pretty much banned from the industry. When her life is at it's lowest point, she is contacted by a distant relative and offered a job with the family business, the McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop in Lake Sackett, Georgia. With no other options on the table, she accepts the offer, only until she can find another job in the city. Getting accustomed to life in a small town and cousins everywhere she turns, and a father she never really knew, was a lot for Margot to endure. But there is humor in every turn.

Although these characters were not as fully developed as I would have liked, I still have to give this book a good rating, simply because I enjoyed it so much.

I listened to the Audible version of this book and the narration was wonderful. The southern accents and appropriate pauses at the right times, and the change in the voices was very well done.

My Rating:

#BookReview - Snatched by Pamela Burford

Title:  Snatched
Author:  Pamela Burford
Genre:  Humor, Romantic Comedy
Release Date:  April 7, 2017

About the Book:
A humorous romantic suspense novel that’s fresh, quirky, and surprising! Find out why Snatched has been described as “Janet Evanovich meets the Coen Brothers.”

Is an uncomplicated divorce and a fresh start at forty too much to ask? Apparently it is for Lucy Narby, whose life goes from blah to bizarro when competing kidnappers lock horns in her kitchen. And really, does the victor have to be that hot? If this is the Stockholm syndrome, it sure didn’t take her long to catch it!

Lucy’s kidnapper calls himself Will but looks suspiciously like ’80s child TV star Ricky Baines, whose acting career was cut short when he himself was snatched and held for ransom 25 years ago in a notorious cold case that remains unsolved. Will’s gang includes an aging French bombshell, an outlandish Irish giant with a mysterious past and a thing for Will’s sister, and long-lost Cousin Hal—a charming fellow who neglects to mention that he happens to be the twisted sociopath who kidnapped Will when he was still America’s favorite little star. Hal spent the past quarter century in the slammer for an unrelated murder, and now he’s out and determined to locate the two-million-dollar ransom Will’s family paid. Someone else dug up the cash while Hal was behind bars, and that sort of thing tends to make twisted sociopaths a tad grouchy.

Fortunately (or not), Lucy’s bigamous ex is on the case. But so are a gay private eye in a fat suit and a bad-tempered parrot with an ax to grind, so no worries. Everyone has a secret and no one is who he seems when Kidnap Fever strikes.

My Review:

Caution:  Some spoilers here.  Just can't seem to write this review without mentioning a few, but I'll do my best to not give away all.

"Snatched" is a crazy, mixed up, conglomerate of too many subplots and too many characters.  Keeping those characters straight was a chore, especially since so many of them had alternate names.  Will was actually Ricky, Keith was actually Hal, Archie (and at one point, Joe) was actually Wesley.  It got rather confusing, especially since there was so much going on at the same time!  The story kept flipping from a kidnapping 25 years ago to today's kidnapping, which wasn't really a kidnapping.  It seems that some people actually want to be kidnapped and will pay to have their fantasy played out.  But when the victim doesn't know it's all play-acting, things get really weird.  It was funny... in an outrageously silly way, especially when additional kidnappers showed up who were hired by someone else.

In the midst of all this humor, we got some gruesome stuff too.  During the kidnapping of a young boy 25 years ago, the kidnapper whacked off the finger of the kid.  Ugh!  Then there was this son-of-a-monster who constantly had his mind in the gutter and talked about having sex with young girls.  Ugh!  Ugh!  At one point I actually hoped the bad guy would shoot Mick and get it over with.

I have to say that Pamela Burford did create some interesting characters.  And the main plot was fun and interesting...  but stopped about a third way through the book.  Then all these subplots took over.  I almost lost total interest and put the book down, but I did like the characters and had to see how the author would tie all these loose ends up together.

My Rating:

About the Author:

Pamela Burford comes from a funny family. You may take that any way you want. She was raised in a household that valued laughter above all, so of course the first thing she looked for in a husband was a sense of humor. Is it any wonder their grown kids are into stand-up comedy and improv? Oh, and here's another fun family fact: Pamela's identical twin sister, Patricia Ryan, aka P.B. Ryan, is also a published novelist. Patricia is the Good Twin, and yeah, Pamela knows what that makes her. But hey, Evil Twins have more fun!

It should come as no surprise that everything Pamela writes is infused with her own quirky brand of humor, from her feel-good contemporary romance and romantic suspense novels to her popular Jane Delaney mystery series, featuring snarky “Death Diva” Jane, her canine sidekick Sexy Beast, and a fun love-triangle subplot. Pamela's own beloved poodle, Murray, wants you to know that any similarities between himself and neurotic, high-strung Sexy Beast are purely coincidental.

Pamela is the proud founder and past president of Long Island Romance Writers, Inc., a chapter of Romance Writers of America. Her books have won awards and sold millions of copies, but what excites her most is hearing from readers. Swing by and say hi at www.pamelaburford.com. And while you're there, don't forget to sign up for her newsletter. Not only will you learn about new releases, freebies, and other fun stuff, but you'll receive a free ebook as her special thank-you!

#BookReview - Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

Title:  Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
Author:  Jonathan Safran Foer
Genre:  Humor, Literary Fiction
Release Date:  September 3, 2013

About the Book:

Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history. What he discovers is solace in that most human quality, imagination.

Meet Oskar Schell, an inventor, Francophile, tambourine player, Shakespearean actor, jeweler, pacifist, correspondent with Stephen Hawking and Ringo Starr. He is nine years old. And he is on an urgent, secret search through the five boroughs of New York. His mission is to find the lock that fits a mysterious key belonging to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11.

An inspired innocent, Oskar is alternately endearing, exasperating, and hilarious as he careens from Central Park to Coney Island to Harlem on his search. Along the way he is always dreaming up inventions to keep those he loves safe from harm. What about a birdseed shirt to let you fly away? What if you could actually hear everyone's heartbeat? His goal is hopeful, but the past speaks a loud warning in stories of those who've lost loved ones before. As Oskar roams New York, he encounters a motley assortment of humanity who are all survivors in their own way. He befriends a 103-year-old war reporter, a tour guide who never leaves the Empire State Building, and lovers enraptured or scorned. Ultimately, Oskar ends his journey where it began, at his father's grave. But now he is accompanied by the silent stranger who has been renting the spare room of his grandmother's apartment. They are there to dig up his father's empty coffin.

My Review:

I had a long drive ahead of me, a drive that took me through the "eclipse" area.  Matching the number of hours I had to drive to one of the Audible recordings I had, I decided to choose this one.  EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE has been around for awhile, but I had not had a chance to read it.  I will tell you right now... I had a very enjoyable trip, sometimes chuckling and laughing out loud and sometimes wiping the tears from my eyes as I listened.  The time sped away.  The narration was extremely good and incredibly fun.

The story takes you back and forth from 1945 Dresden, Germany to 2003 New York City.  The historical descriptions of the bombings during WWII ate away at my heart.  Yet the antics of young Oskar made me smile.

Oskar and his father had a warm and close relationship.  Oskar's life was turned upside down when his father's life was cut short on 9/11.  The events of that day left Oskar devastated, hiding certain facts from his mother, and making Oskar desperate to reconnect with his father in some way.  After finding a key hidden in a blue vase, Oskar goes through extremes seeking the lock that fits this key.  During his search, he meets a variety of characters including the man who is renting the spare room in his grandmother's apartment.

Oskar is a bright, intelligent, creative young boy who reminds me a bit of a young Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory.  He writes letters.  A lot of letters.  He writes to people like Stephen Hawking and Jane Goodall, asking to be their protege.

I can see where this would get mixed reviews, but I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed listening to this unique novel.  Not the typical story line.  This one was truly different.  This was a story about family relationships and the bond between fathers and sons... and grandsons.

My Rating:

About the Author:
Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of the bestseller Everything Is Illuminated, named Book of the Year by the Los Angeles Times and the winner of numerous awards, including the Guardian First Book Prize, the National Jewish Book Award, and the New York Public Library Young Lions Prize. Foer was one of Rolling Stone's “People of the Year” and Esquire's “Best and Brightest.” Foreign rights to his new novel have already been sold in ten countries. The film of Everything Is Illuminated, directed by Liev Schreiber and starring Elijah Wood, will be released in August 2005. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close has been optioned for film by Scott Rudin Productions in conjunction with Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures. Foer lives in Brooklyn, New York.

#BookReview - The Gift by Julie Hodgson

Title:  The Gift
Author:  Julie Hodgson
Genre:  Fantasy, Humor
Release Date:  November 14, 2016

About the Book:

Joe is Christmas’s number one fan. He absolutely loves it and can’t wait to spend it with his wife, Beth, doing what they love best: eating mince pies, drinking mulled wine, laughing and snuggling while It’s a Wonderful Life plays on the TV. However, Beth has a slightly different idea this year. She wants to have a terrible time, or why else would she have invited her mother to stay – the demon mother-in-law from hell, who hates Christmas and everything about it? In fact, there is only one thing that the dreaded MIL hates more than Christmas … and that is Joe.

Thankfully, Joe has an ally in his war against the orange-haired, gum-chewing monster: a shopping centre Santa who isn’t all that he seems. This larger-than-life Father Christmas presents Joe with a magical gift that he promises will make the problem disappear, but this innocent-looking parcel kick-starts an adventure that Joe will never forget. If he can make it to Christmas day in one piece and save his wife and unborn child from a lifetime in Lapland, he will have learned one vitally important lesson: to be careful what you wish for … you might just get it.

My Review:

This was a fun story!  Whether you read it during Christmas in July or while standing in those long lines at the mall in December, this book will certainly entertain you.

Julie Hodgson tells a tale of a Christmas adventure with fun and humor and yet still gets down to what is truly special about the holiday season.

The story starts off with Joe finding out that his mother-in-law will be staying with him and his wife Beth for a week at Christmastime.  Joe does his best to make it through the first day, but after Beth's mother smashes his Christmas doorbell and puts salt in his Christmas cake, he storms out of the house and ends up in the mall waiting to see Father Christmas.  What happens next will make you smile and even giggle... and will warm your heart at the same time.

This was a delightful quick read at only around 100 pages.

#BookReview - Mother, Can You NOT? by Kate Siegel

Title: Mother, Can You Not?
Author: Kate Siegel
Publisher: Crown Archetype/Random House, LLC
Release Date: April 5, 2016
Genre: Humor, Parenting & Families, Entertainment

About the Book:

Based on the wildly popular Instagram account @CrazyJewishMom, Kate Siegel's essay collection about life with the woman who redefined the term "helicopter mom"

There is nothing more wonderful than a mother’s love. There is also nothing more annoying. Who else can proudly insist that you’re perfect while simultaneously making you question every career, fashion, and relationship decision you have ever made?

No one understands the delicate mother-daughter dynamic better than Kate Siegel—her own mother drove her so crazy that she decided to broadcast their hilarious conversations on Instagram. Soon, hundreds of thousands of people were following their daily text exchanges, eager to see what outrageous thing Kate’s mom would do next. Now, in Mother, Can You NOT?, Kate pays tribute to the woman who invented the concept of drone parenting.

From embarrassing moments (like crashing Kate's gynecological exams) to outrageous stories (like the time she made Kate steal a cat from the pound) to hilarious celebrations (including but not limited to parties for Kate's menstrual cycles), Mother, Can you NOT? lovingly lampoons the lengths to which our mothers will go to better our lives (even if it feels like they’re ruining them in the process).

Scherry's Review:

Although Janna and I generally reach for different genre's, occasionally we both grab the same book to read and review.  That's what happened here.  Sort of.

My youngest daughter actually bought this book for me.  Was she trying to tell me something?  She and I have a great relationship and talk about things I would have NEVER talked to my own mother about... but I don't think I ever went as far as Kate Siegel's mom did.  At least I never coerced her into stealing a cat for me.  And I never, ever, threw her a "period party"!  I did hover over her as a child, I guess.  Just simple stuff like being the room mother in school and going on every field trip with her and being her girl scout leader because no other girl scout leader could do it right.  We do talk on the phone several times a day, and I do send her an occasional text message... usually telling her about crazy stuff her father is doing.  And perhaps I do comment on her love life from time to time.  And about sex.   And sex toys.  OMG!  I'M JUST LIKE KATE'S MOM!

All that aside... I really loved this book.  I laughed so hard I had tears streaming down my face.  But I totally get it!  Kim is the kind of mom I could be best friends with!  She just wants to make Kate's life so perfect!  Perhaps she went to extreme measures a few times, but it all seemed to work out.  That's what mom's do!

Loved this book!!

Janna's Review:

I've been a fan of the Instagram Account @CrazyJewishMom for several years. When I found out she'd released a book, I couldn't help myself. I had to pick it up. This book is terrific! I laughed so hard that I cried. I even ended up reading parts of it to my son -- you know, just to remind him that as crazy and neurotic as he thinks I am -- I could be even worse. He got such a kick out of it, he even borrowed it from me so he could finish reading it too.

This is a quick and incredibly fun read. Kate's mom's antics are hilarious and the little screenshots of the instant messages at the end of each chapter will make you want to read more! At the very least, read a sample of this book -- or check out their Instagram account. Trust me, you don't want to miss out on this book.
