Book Review: A Matter of Time by Michael J. Bowler

Title:  A Matter of Time
Author:  Michael J. Bowler
Genre:  Time Travel, Romance, Thriller
Release Date:  March 2, 2012

From the Back Cover:

Love is timeless, Time is heartless, and Fate in unmerciful.

The world's greatest evil stalks the world's greatest ship, and the only one who can stop him hasn't been born yet.

Jamie Collins is a junior at Santa Clara University in 1986. He has friends, a professor who mentors him, and a promising future as a writer.

Then the dreams begin - nightmarish memories that transport him back to a time and place fifty years before he was born: Titanic's maiden voyage in 1912.

When Jamie discovers a foreign cell in his blood that links him to the famous vessel, the two timelines begin to overlap and he realizes an unimaginable truth - something supernatural stalks the ill-fated ship, something that will kill him if he can't stop it first. And the only way to stop it may be to prevent Titanic from sinking.

But even if he can figure out a way to do that, should he? What will be the effect on history if he succeeds? And what about the lady he wasn't supposed to fall in love with? As her destiny becomes entwined with his, Jamie discovers the value of friendship, the power of love, the impact of evil, and the vagaries of Fate.

My Review:

When I first starting reading A Matter of Time I wasn't sure I was going to like it.  I thought it was going to be just a book about college students.  Not my cup of tea.  But then... WHAM!  The book really took off and I could not put it down!  Read it straight through!  Laundry did not get done and we ended up ordering pizza for dinner because I couldn't put the book down long enough to cook!

I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I need to be careful with how much I say in this review.  Jamie Collins starts having nightmares, but are they dreams or memories?  Soon Jamie finds that the sun burns his skin and blinds him and he is weak and tired during the day.  But then at night, he is a bundle of energy... with a craving for blood.  He knows what he needs to do to end his nightmare that is becoming reality, but no one believes him.  His roommate travels with him across the country and then out to sea where Jamie convinced the ship captain and his roommate to leave him out in the sea at the coordinates where the Titanic went down 75 years earlier.  That's when things got really crazy!

This entire story is so bizarre yet Michael J. Bowler managed to pull it all together in an intriguing tale of time travel, true love and following your destiny.  It is thought provoking, making the reader wonder if you would change history if you had the opportunity.

This book is probably YA.  There is a touch of romance but nothing explicit, and a bit of gore as Jamie starts craving blood.
